It is an old saying from times long past. It means that to achieve glory and earn a deep character you must first start by mastering mundane tasks - very much the mentality ingrained in japanese society!

Of course, a literal translation is never exact. I did my best, but the beauty lies in it's japanese form. I am sorry that I cannot emulate it, though the fault lies within the english language itself.
