Why aren't you using a fully libre GNU/Linux operating system? Do you hate freedom?

I use debian-sid, with nonfree stuff....

I can't go full gnew-sence, but I really love Richard Stallman and his ideals more and more. I'm probably going only be using linux for everything with as little as possible nonfree software, and just keep a windows machine around strictly as a media center for watching videos and playing emulators.

This has mainly been brought on by an extreme disgust for many laws, advertisements, people threatening me with laws all the time my entire life to force me into doing things they should not be allowed to do with my body, societal doctrines, just everything. It's been building up and causing me to get fucking disgusted with everything, and I think using just linux and thinking a bit more like my freedom loving pal Stallman would help me feel better about it.

Muh vendetta.

As a general default I don't suggest anyone use Arch Linux.

Don't get me wrong though. There's a reason why I'm still using it--I actually love it.

But if you don't know anything about Linux (most people don't) and are easily frustrated about computers (most people are) then it's "difficult" to use.

That and because most people who know what they're doing use it, they can be condescending about it.

Debian on the desktop, Gentoo on the servers.

Tiling WM with a trackball and mech makes it a great programming envitroment.

I don't like the freedom as an ideal, but because I like having complete control and access to my OS, plus OS is a better development process. I'll use non-free software, but only if there's not alternative means.

Don't. Fedora is a clusterfuck of bad design. Yum is an extremely slow resource hog which can't manage packages for more than one month without distribution-breaking problems.

Fedora has a large number of 'security' add-on built in the system, like the security module SELinux, which make ridiculously difficult to do anything.

Fedora is the worse distribution I've ever worked with, and I've worked with SUSE, Mandriva, Debian, Gentoo, Ubuntu, Mint, and various non-linux distributions such as OpenBSD.

>> No.10637543

Well, shit. I'm fairly new to Linux and I wanted to try a distro with newer packages that's easier to use than Arch, so I assumed that Fedora might suit my needs. Obviously I'd install it in a VM to try it out a bit before abandoning Debian, but I might try Arch first if it's really that bad.

Well that's one.
People say it's better for coding, and it runs better. I can't speak for the coding bit since I don't code, but I do feel like everything runs better on Linux --and I'm pretty sure my Firefox uses less memory in Linux-- but that could easily just be a placebo affect. It's customizable if you're into that kind of thing. And it can either be light weight enough to run quickly on a machine from the 80s or come installed with everything you'll need depending on your distro. Also, it's very stable. It tends to crash less than Windows and if you want you can have it never restart since you don't have to restart for any kind of update (you natively have to restart for kernel updates, but you can get Ksplice for that if you don't care about freedoms) However, the truth of the matter is if you don't already know why you should use Linux then it doesn't matter to you as a user and it just comes down to personal preference. Oh yeah and there's the whole safety from obscurity thing, since Linux has such a small Desktop market share there's fewer malicious programs written for it, but you shouldn't get malicious programs on Windows if you don't click on "hot teenage girl.jpg.exe" or "lonely housewives.jpg.exe"

>but that could easily just be a placebo affect.

It's not. ext4 has much better file I/O than NTFS, and has support for ZFS (I think). he OS itself takes far less resources too depending on what your setup is. Either way it's faster than Windows, and way faster than OSX.
