Can I keep them as a pet? They look pretty cute.

>> No.10607542

>>10603838
They unfortunately don't fare well as pets, frequently starving despite their otherwise incredible hardiness (a vital factor for toxin detection is obtained from their blood, usually by collecting horseshoe crabs by the thousands, piercing their cardiac sinuses, bleeding them out and returning them back to the sea. This procedure may deplete one third of their blood supply, though the animal, if not rattled considerably during handling and transportation, survives with ease and quickly recovers any lost blood - so I suppose the Atlantic horseshoe crab in particular would be a kind but clumsy and naive young girl who regularly agrees to donate her priceless blood to shady men in laboratory coats because they pat her head and ask her nicely).

You may want to get a colony of Triops instead, since those take better to captivity, are widely available, require little in the way of maintenance, come in more manageable sizes (i.e. a few centimeters instead of dinner plate-sized) and look fairly similar despite being only distantly related to horseshoe crabs (which are chelicerates and not crustaceans, though with all that recent support on how insects are most closely related to remipedes, you never know what else is going to end up as a crustacean those days). They are also quite cute, constantly scrambling around the sediment and stirring the soil with their many legs in hopes of finding food scraps.

>>10598651
But jellyfish aren't exactly malicious while stinging (they in fact can't help it, since the nematocyst firing mechanism is automatic). They're merely looking for food, and some will even flash in alarm whenever a foreign object bumps into them - a far cry from venom-laden tentacle platforms swarming across the seven seas in search of soft, feeble flesh to sting.

>> No.10607547

>>10607542
And even the Portuguese man o' war, with up to fifty meters of trailing tentacles and hundreds of nematocysts in every centimeter of tissue, can be adorable if you consider that the entire "animal" is a conglomerate of myriad tiny zooids - each tentacle is under the jurisdiction of a single dactylozooid, which work together to catch their prey and haul it up for the gastrozooids to process (dactylozooids themselves are mouthless and will starve without their fellow zooids). While the man o' war itself lacks them, other siphonophores also feature jellyfish-like units called nectophores, capable swimmers responsible for pulling the colony around (the man o' war is bound to the whim of the wind, bearing only its gas-filled raft). Bracts, zooids specialized to such an extent that their origin is a matter of debate, act as shields for other zooids in times of danger, while gonozooids produce the colony's supply of eggs and/or sperm (siphonophores may be hermaphroditic or dioecious).

So you could think of each element in a siphonophore colony as a cute young maiden - nectophore-tan, for example, would be an athletic but completely flat-chested little girl wearing a school swimsuit and doing her best to keep the colony afloat, bract-tan would be a serious, hardworking young lady gallantly protecting her little sisters with her shield, gastrozooid-tan would be a small, shy girl earnestly working to haul in large fish with her single "tentacle" (an old fishing rod) and cooking it for the rest of the colony and gonodendron-tan would be an elegant and gentle onee-san who would offer guidance to her sisters (gonodendrons may also assist in various digestive and sensory functions) in addition to taking good care of the colony's eggs. And after the colony finishes its tasks for the day, the girls would gather behind their defenses and spend the night in each other's arms, enjoying their sisters' warmth and listening to their breathing as they slowly drift to sleep.
