10592192 No.10592192 [Reply] [Original]

Is there anyone here that's been checking Pixiv fairly religiously for awhile now? I've been checking it for about three years, generally for certain Touhous, and I noticed a couple of things about some artists that I've known for awhile. Some of them have drawn certain characters quite a lot, but then suddenly just stop drawing that character, or they may even stop drawing much at all. Several of the artists that I noticed do this, actually submitted a doujinshi to the previous Reitaisai or Comiket as their last work of that character. Then, after the Comiket or Reitaisai, they aren't nearly as active anymore or at all. Does anyone know why this is, or noticed anything similar with artists they've followed? Are they maybe burned out on drawing a certain character so much that they just get bored of it, or even worse, bored of drawing all together?

>> No.10592244

It's probably burn out. Especially when you are submitting something with a deadline, takes a lot of the enjoyment out of it.

Probably a combination of burn out and lack of interest. Artists are no different than other people, and many indulge in a favourite character or game for months or even years before losing all interest. Which is a shame, since this usually happens right when they've hit their peak performance in terms of quality.

If they've quit drawing altogether, however, you can safely assume that some sort of lifestyle change is at hand.

>> No.10592591

If the artist stopped drawing altogether: he got a job.

If the artist stopped drawing their favorite character: he got a girlfriend.

Though to be honest, the only time when I saw the latter happen was when the artist abandoned drawing fanart completely in favor of original content, presumably with hopes of monetizing it.

So, in short, not everyone can be a NEET forever.

A few years back, I was in a Touhou doujin group based in Japan. We would draw our Touhous very often, whether it is paint-chatting or posting them on pixiv and blogs. We would compile our works in form of artbooks and various merchandises, actively participating in various events such as Reitaisai and Comiket. Eventually our leader had finished his tertiary education in art, and set out to secure a steady job. That was when things started to change. He kept talking about "quitting" Touhou, as in, drawing and producing original content during his free time instead of Touhou. He was the first to stop drawing the Touhous. He had a good reason, that original artworks help to add on to our resume, whereas fan art doesn't. He also wanted to explore his creativity and make his own characters instead. As much as we did share his sentiments, we kept reminding ourselves that we started out due to this one reason: yes, we do love drawing but the passion towards Touhou was what brought us together. After that, we did not draw our Touhous that often anymore. We did not even make new artbooks for a whole year. Our leader left the group; the rest of us stuck together, saying that we would like to continue with this Touhou shit. But we didn't really mean it. As we near graduation from our college/institution, pretty much none of us drew Touhous anymore. Our pixiv and blogs were filled with original designs instead. We realised that art was the main thing that we pursue, and Touhou was something that happens to pass by. Our last Touhou artbook was on Comiket 80. Since then, the group disbanded and we were scattered away. I am only in contact with one ex-comrade, and she is pretty much over Touhou, heck, she doesn't even draw anymore. As for me, I was graduated from an arts course, and found a relevant job, so I still draw and paint actively. But not Touhous. Even so, I'm glad Touhou is strong in /jp/, I enjoy hanging out here and reminiscing the old times.

>first-hand story from a pixiv artist
I know that feels, man. I have 800+ followers on pixiv, 2/3 of which probably added me during my active 2hu-drawing stage. Sometimes I can almost feels their disappointment when they see a new feed from me, then realizing it ain't a 2hu update. Maybe I should a 2hu sometime for the old times sake.

I actually really want to message some Pixiv artists and ask how they are doing. But my Japanese is very entry level, so basically useless. Does anyone have any experience with trying to communicate with some Pixiv artists in English, or at least using a translator?

Don't feel bad. There comes a time to move on... and besides, there will be other young up-and-coming artists who will take up the Touhou torch.

Is there money in pixiv?
Why give out your drawings for free when you can make a little bit of money selling them at conventions for them to be ripped and then distributed online?

Touhou is just a stepping stone.
Get good at drawing other people's characters until you can make money off of those designs, and then be nice and make money off of your own designs instead of leeching off of ZUN's fame.

For artists that have been posting on Pixiv for a long time, sometimes I look back to see when they started drawing ero.
