Books have:

- generally high-quality stories

Since pictures are the only advantage that VNs have over books, I asked you why you would play a VN with shitty images. You said that you don't play VNs for the images, and play them instead for the stories.

I asked you why you would do this, since it is completely contrary to the traits of the VN genre (why read something with pictures if you don't care about the pictures?).

But yes, she makes a marked attempt to make her games more "artistic", I guess you could say. They're thinking (wo)man's games. They have a message that goes beyond what is actually happening in the story.

That's not to say there aren't Japanese games like that, but it's something they seem to be really bad at. They're squandering the medium while talented authors (and I say "authors", not "game creators") are doing bigger and better things.

Not Touhou, but I've played the same game for at least an hour a day 3-7 times a week for the past five years or so. I know every single thing about the game. I'd like to agree at least when it comes to VNs usually having shitty stories. From what I can tell, the majority of it is filth because people don't want to deviate from the trend or they won't get any money for it.

Umineko, on the other hand, is a great story. Very much in the minority for VNs. It also has lots of wonderful music, which is half of the experience. And for that matter, I do think the art is just fine.

Play Digital: A Love Story. It's not a VN in the traditional sense, but it's basically a love story set on 1980s BBSes.

don't take it personally babe, it just ain't your story is a spiritual sequel to Digital. It's more of a straight-up VN, set in the future where social networking has become more pervasive. It raises some interesting questions about privacy and whether privacy matters. It was written in under a month for a competition.

Analogue: A Hate Story is about an abandoned spaceship in the future. You come across it and learn about its inhabitants and culture from the ship's on-board AIs and files. Basically, society on the ship had regressed to that of medieval Korea. The main character you follow was an ordinary girl who was cryonically frozen due to illness, then she was awoken on the ship years later. It's Christine Love's only commercial game, but you can download it immorally at http://ahatestory.com/120126/
