10589590 No.10589590 [Reply] [Original]

>Initially, my audience was otaku who attend Comiket, which are a very small fraction of Japanese otaku, themselves a small part of Japanese people in general! I never thought for one second that I could be read, published, edited at the other end of the planet, in France... As for Higurashi, I never thought that people outside Japan might be interested. Umineko in particular is a text that even Japanese people can have difficulty reading. So, to imagine that foreigners have made the effort to read it, understand it, and translate it, is an indescribable happiness to me.

Since you pretty obviously have some mental deficiency, I'll break down my argument into terms you can hopefully understand.

VNs have:

- generally low-quality stories
- generally low-quality pictures

Books have:

- generally high-quality stories

Since pictures are the only advantage that VNs have over books, I asked you why you would play a VN with shitty images. You said that you don't play VNs for the images, and play them instead for the stories.

I asked you why you would do this, since it is completely contrary to the traits of the VN genre (why read something with pictures if you don't care about the pictures?).

You, in a bout of trisomic rage, threw your hands up in the air and said 'I JUST LIKE PLAYING VNS!!!', so I wrote this to help you understand why you're dumb. I hope I've been successful.

So, now to the matter at hand: Why do some people like to watch shitty action movies instead of going to the theater? Why do you look at VN art instead of going to the museum and look at real art? Why are people eating crappy junkfood instead of healthy meals? Because they like it.

You are fucking retarded, it works both ways. I can complain about how Canterbury Tales suck because it's written in Middle English, not modern English, and it would be entirely invalid because if you understood it, you would enjoy it regardless. Same goes for art, some people enjoy it, while others don't, and you have no right to ridicule people who do, because otherwise, I can call you a tasteless fuck and I would be right. Have you seen works of art that are worth millions? Do they all have that "quality" of detail and character feature that you hold so important? What do you mean? Most Japanese VNs are straight-up porn slideshows, I don't see why you'd even find that controversial.

But yes, she makes a marked attempt to make her games more "artistic", I guess you could say. They're thinking (wo)man's games. They have a message that goes beyond what is actually happening in the story.

That's not to say there aren't Japanese games like that, but it's something they seem to be really bad at. They're squandering the medium while talented authors (and I say "authors", not "game creators") are doing bigger and better things.

It's a completely linear game and there are other games like it, but I'm too scared to play them. I'm comfortable playing this game. Sometimes I get sick of it but I don't care, I keep playing.

Same with movies. Tons of classic movies I haven't watched, but I watch the same ones over and over. I hate change. Change is uncomfortable and a little scary.

Play Digital: A Love Story. It's not a VN in the traditional sense, but it's basically a love story set on 1980s BBSes.

don't take it personally babe, it just ain't your story is a spiritual sequel to Digital. It's more of a straight-up VN, set in the future where social networking has become more pervasive. It raises some interesting questions about privacy and whether privacy matters. It was written in under a month for a competition.

Analogue: A Hate Story is about an abandoned spaceship in the future. You come across it and learn about its inhabitants and culture from the ship's on-board AIs and files. Basically, society on the ship had regressed to that of medieval Korea. The main character you follow was an ordinary girl who was cryonically frozen due to illness, then she was awoken on the ship years later. It's Christine Love's only commercial game, but you can download it immorally at http://ahatestory.com/120126/

>she was careful to avoid mentioning or assuming the gender of the player or the character they control, though the love interests in the games are female. Privately, however, she thinks of them as female, as her intention was to create games that could be easily appreciated by gay and lesbian people such as herself,

Nevermind.

I didn't know were talking about Umineko exclusively. I don't want to read this thread. It's clearly full of people of pretentious /lit/-goers.
