The twist to her story is quite amusing, but as a character she really isn't all that interesting yet she gets 80% of the fanart (and most artists draw her with breasts for some reason, what the fuck).

I don't know, honestly. It was one of the more memorable stories I suppose, and a lot of people mightn't have expected that twist. I know when I think of Higanbana's individual stories, that one comes straight to mind.

As did I. I'm usually not a fan of seven school mysteries shit, but Higanbana was very well executed. I hope he goes back to it too because RGD is certainly not the kind of writing he's best at.

I don't think that's necessary. Your life can be hell, but that alone won't create one of these beings. It's not a factor at all. You have to do weird shit with magic, just like Rika did with the help of Hanyuu.

The "witch" Bernkastel was created when Frederica Bernkastel had lived for so many years that she couldn't carry all of her memories to the next world, because the human brain has a limit. Those memories remained in that higher dimension, most of them useless, painful or just repeated. Even if she had been the happiest human in the world, using that kind of magic would have created a non-human copy of herself eventually.

At least that's what I understood from Higurashi.

By the way, why couldn't she remember her own death and the last hours before she died? Hanyuu said that it was because she needed some time to transfer them to "the world of gods" (I guess she is talking about the sea of kakera), but she has lied before.

What if Hanyuu did it on purpose because the feeling of death is traumatic enough to make you go crazy? No wonder we are supposed to stop existing shortly after experiencing something like that. No wonder Bernkastel is so fucking crazy even though she is free from all the limitations of human life.

Yes and no. They are at the same level than a person playing video game on his computer. When they entered the Kakera around Umineko, they agreed to play by the rules of this Kakera. By these rules, there momentary characters can be killed, harmed or injured by things that couldn't normally, exactly like your video game character can be injured by virtual opponents. Yet, you always have the possibility to delete your characters, remove the game, or thrash your computer.

As I understand, it's the same thing for them. They could simply destroy the Kakera if they really wanted to, but till they play the game, they are bounds by its rule. Barring cheatcodes.

I doubt she knew anything about the game. My theory is that, just like Lambdadelta made Takano succeed as long as her willpower was stronger than Rika's, Featherine gave Hanyuu the power to travel between kakera. She was a small god and probably didn't have that power from the beggining. Both witches helped their own pieces without interacting with them.

She's very easy to understand, because she has the same thought all escapist has, except she can act.

Voyagers witches are truly good metaphors for readers.
