Pretty much all of OS X's GUI system is way better than X11. Cocoa, Quartz, and the Core libraries are much neater than the clusterfuck that is X. Plus it's faster and prettier, particularly the fonts.

I just hope Wayland takes off soon and replaces X. X and the baggage that comes with it are the worst things about Linux. It's not like the GNU utilities where you can just ignore aspects of it or find a drop-in replacement, it's the de facto standard and pretty much the only working GUI system that everyone insists on building on top of.

The second thing I dislike about it is the fact that 90% of the scripts are made for bash, so I can't use any real coreutils replacement. I really like the design of OSS. It's Unixy and fun. You can redirect a sound file to the audio device (cat somemusic > /dev/dsp) or you can record audio by redirecting to a file (cat /dev/dsp > myrecording). It just uses the regular read() and write() calls, which is pretty clever.

ALSA has some mode to emulate OSS, but it would be nice if it worked like this in the first place. Instead it has its own routines rather than using the regular system calls that already exist.
Plus until one of the later Linux 2.6 releases, it didn't even support hardware mixing. You had to use dmix or something. A vanilla install of Linux in the late 2000s would not let you play more than one sound at a time. It's mindblowing how stupid that is.

OS X font rendering is plain garbage. Its hinter is much worse than FreeType's autohinter, really blurry. Not to mention the uneven and ugly texture caused by lousy hinting and Apple trying to mimicking the effect of ink spreading on paper. Microsoft ClearType or FreeType with Infinality are far better.

If you think X11 is one of the things holding GNU/Linux back you're mistaken. It might be obsolete and clunky, but workarounds are being used successfully.

PostScript and PDF files look shitty on-screen because they're primarily intended for print. In many cases when you zoom into a PDF, you're scaling vectors, not adjusting a font size.
