- Both Arcana Heart and Melty Blood are Marvel vs. Streetfighter copy pasta. Gameplay-wise they are same shit, different toilet.
- Both have equally shitty music.
- Arcana Heart has good graphics and sprites. Melty Blood has shitty sprites, and shit graphics. It still looks and plays like an amateur video game thanks to the faggotry of Ecole.

Winner: Arcana Heart

Same could be said about MB.

I'm surprised so many people are recommending Guilty Gear (one of my favorite series), yet put down other, more influential (original) fighters such as the Marvel vs. Capcom series. Maybe because it's more popular?

GG is the most derivative 2D fighter series ever made. It strictly borrows (steals) from Marvel/Capom, and dial-up doujn fighters like Queen of Hearts. The character designs strictly borrows from popular anime artists; there is no originality there. Even the majority of the music is just remixes of various metal/rock songs.

Go watch Giant Robo OAV. You should recognize 5 Guilty Gear characters right off the bat. The series is still better than Gurren Lagann too.

Mirror Moon's almost done with the MBAC translation, but they've been almost done for a while now. They've got to go in and fix a bunch of pics with text on them and theres ~1,000+

MBAC is decent. The gameplay is alright, but the music is great. Its pretty much only for people who love Type-Moon.

Guilty Gear, on the other hand, rapes. Im a hueg TM fanboi, and even I think GG is the best 2-D out there. Its hella fast and technical, it looks great, and the story is cool. Music is pro status as well. GGXX:Accent Core is the most recent and AC Plus comes out soon. You can either buy Plus as the whole game or an addon for like 1/3 the price (if u already have AC). You can also get GGXX slash (an older version) for free online play.

Street Fighter is ok, imo. but it is a classic and all that. MvC2 is pretty crap. theres only like 3 viable characters and theres infinite combos. HnK rapes, only cuz of the instant kill music

OP, I am proud to see that you want to expand your horizons. Here's a handy primer for you:

- Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo (the version available thru SF Anniversary Collection). Old as dirt but a great game to learn the fundamentals of 2D fighters on. Very well balanced at all levels of play.

NOTABLE QUIRKS: Throws are very powerful but can be teched for damage reduction/knockdown avoidance by inputting the same throw command as one is thrown. Supers are very hard to combo into, but all have startup invincibility. Juggles are very limited to very specific attacks (Ryu's jumping MP, Bison's jumping MP, Chun and Dee Jay's upkicks). Fireballs are very powerful - especially O. Sagat's.

>> No.1055334

- The King of Fighters ' 98 - One of the most well-rounded and easy-to-play KOF games, as well as one of the best balanced. A wide variety of characters for people who like to min-max their playing style. 3-on-3 team gameplay -- whoever loses all three characters in sequence first loses.

NOTABLE QUIRKS: Low jump is pretty much the defining feature of KOF, allowing every character access to fast and versatile overhead attacks.

You have the ability to combo into many command throws, making grappler characters generally very strong (particularly: O. Yashiro, Daimon, Clark, to a lesser extent Ralf). Advanced Mode probably the best all-around mode to play in, since you get an MB-style run, invincible rolls forward or backward (vulnerable to throws, however), and you build meter Street-Fighter-style by doing special moves rather than relying on a DBZ-style stand-and-charge-while-screaming mode.

You can cancel many basic moves even if they fail to hit or get blocked (whiff canceling), which can be useful for baiting attacks or covering mistakes when used properly.

You have guard cancel rolls or attacks to escape pressure. Juggles can be slightly unintuitive at first because certain moves will only cleanly juggle when the opponent is at a certain height, and the buffering system isn't very loose, so good timing is crucial on certain combos.

>> No.1055406

- Marvel vs. Capcom 2. At a casual level this game's pretty much a gas (so if you're just gonna be playing with friends, don't worry too much about it), but it gets kind of a bum rap for being messy at higher-level play, which really isn't the whole story.

MvC2 behaves very differently from most other 2D fighting games -- even the blitzier ones like Guilty Gear and MB -- because its system is INCREDIBLY freeform. You can cancel any basic attack into almost any special or super at ANY time, and instead of playing three characters in sequence you're essentially playing three characters in one, simultaneously, and trying to manage a vast area of screen space in which to land juggles and super combos in perhaps THE most permissive juggle system of all time. As a result, it LOOKS all but unintelligible to people who don't follow MvC2 very closely -- but with a little homework and a bit of sit-and-watch, the lightning-fast subtleties of Marvel begin to become a bit more apparent.

NOTABLE QUIRKS: Too many to friggin' list. If Marvel intrigues you, the best way to get acquainted with what's involved in it is to watch videos on YouTube or some crap and then hit the SRK wiki/MvC2 forums to read up on just what the hell happened besides Cable firing his gun nonstop and Storm going "HAW! HAW! HAW!" like some kind of retarded bird.

- Street Fighter 3: Third Strike - Somewhere between Super Turbo and KOF in terms of game pace. The ease of parrying and the relatively slow flight speed, deployment, and low blockstun of projectiles means fireballing is much, MUCH less powerful than in Super Turbo. A very quirky cast with very few SF staples. Infamously powerful characters include Chun-Li, Ken, and Yun (followed closely by characters like Makoto and Dudley).

The lack of low jump makes 3S's close-up game a bit more cerebral than KOF's low jump/down-B, down-A/throw bonanza. The juggle system is surprisingly intuitive (if it LOOKS like it juggles, it almost certainly does) and rather free-form compared with KOF, though not nearly as permissive as Guilty Gear/MB.

Parrying is really at the heart of 3S - if you can parry the attacks your opponent most frequently employs, you can eat predictable people for breakfast -- but by that same token, you have to really know how to break your rhythm in order to avoid getting parry punished every time your character twitches.

NOTABLE QUIRKS: Besides parrying, most characters have one or more MB-esque chain combo strings, canned strings which may or may not actually combo. Some of these chains are useless (Ryu), others are absolutely crucial to characters' gameplay (Dudley, Ken, Ibuki). Unlike other SF games, instead of multiple supers, you can only "equip" one super art at a time when you pick your character. Some supers are INFINITELY better than others (Ken's SA3, Chun's SA2, Yun's SA3), but with other characters you may be able to get different utility out of varying supers (Ryu's SA1 vs SA3, Dudley's SA1 vs SA3).

- Guilty Gear XX and subsequent revisions -- It's unlikely you haven't heard of this, but there it is. Some of the kookiest characters ever in a fighting game, in a very fast game with a VERY intricate system. Cheesy but lovable '80s metal accompanies your wacky melees with trap shota-nuns with yoyos, 9-foot-tall ex-serial-killer doctors with paper bags over their head, and a guy who shoots fire who's totally gay for the guy who shoots lightning. (Seriously. I used to LAUGH at the SolxKy crowd until I took a look at the OFFICIAL artwork by Ishiwatari. They are practically reaching down each others' pants in certain pieces.)

>> No.1055563

>>1055554

NOTABLE QUIRKS: The Guilty Gear system is full of ALL KINDS of minutiae, and has only gotten more involved as later revisions have come along. First of all, there's Roman Cancel, which allows you to use super meter to cut most of your moves off mid-animation when they otherwise couldn't be cancelled, which is crucial to extending many characters' staple combos. There's also False Roman Cancel, a move-specific Roman Cancel with a strict timing window that costs much less meter and offers monstrous utility in most moves that have it. There's the Dust Attacks, which are overhead moves that put the opponent in a special launch state with a "homing" jump afterwards for a free air combo. And of course there are the Burst attacks, invincible moves that can be used on their own or WHILE YOU'RE BEING COMBOED to break loose and regain momentum (but they have very long "cooldowns" that prevent their abuse). The minutiae of hit-states in juggles are what makes Guilty Gear really kind of a pain in the ass to learn -- wall bounces, clean hits, wall sticks, ground slides, slams, OTGs, varying juggle gravities -- Guilty Gear has a much wider array of hit states to take account for than, say, MvC2. Depending on what character you pick, you may have to learn a bunch of arcane combos to whoop maximum ass, or you may be able to get by with a few short juggles and strings.

That covers my personal favorite 2D FIGHT MAN GAEMS. Go forth and conquer, OP!

If you like Touhou, you'll love SWR. It's fun to play at any level, and watching lolis hit each other is fun incarnate. If you're into fighting games for the mechanics, then don't. Meltan or IaMP is a lot better for that. Even then, most people here only play because other people on /jp/ play. MvC2 is broken at high level play(read: broken altogether), it's just a matter of who catches who first. GGXX is hands down the best fighting system around, but a small difference in skill is enough to make an entire match one-sided. SF 3rd Strike is just as good at a slower pace. KoF games force you to be very agressive to do well, but I think they're good for whatever kind of fightan you're looking for.

Once again: GGXX is just as "broken" as Marvel. 75% damage combos do not belong in any fighting game. It's only common sense.

By the time Arc Systems started to tweak GGXX with new versions, most of the Japanese stopped giving a shit about the game. Hence, they're pumping out new content now, like BlazBlue.

Personally, I like how the diary update on tasofro's site shows a screenshot of Suika doing a 7.8k damage combo.
