How are the rest of non-crossboard, non- confucker, users of /jp/ coping with Yume Nikki being sold out? I was going to give Kiki the benefit of the doubt, assuming he was pressured by corporations into selling out his IP, but given that it started with phone straps, and the low amount of advertisement, it seems only likely that it's all his willing.

Goodbye Yume Nikki.

Yume Nikki got old years ago; most of the people that are interested in it now are gross and dumb. Just ignore them, it's not worth the trouble.

Fuck hipster, fuck elistism, it was something /jp/ had, and other small groups or singular people that weren't totally connected with /jp/. It was something that wasn't shitted up by other boards or people. When something's pure it can prosper and those who've partaken in it can feel connected, in a bond sort of way. Sounds pretty faggy, but YN meant a lot to me and even the people at Uboachan, it seemed. IAfter YN finishing, it was one of the best things ever experienced, and so I ended up checking that place out (found out about YN from /jp/ years ago). After I checked out IRC for questions about getting it to work I noticed everyone there was batshit crazy. But they didn't fag the whole thing up by spreading it to normals. And there was some nice content created there. The worst thing really was the conscum meetups, but whatever.

Anyways I just thing creating something this unqiue and loved, should be kept sacred as ZUN has done by not trying to profit off of his stuff more than only to cover the costs of setting conventions up or whatever. I don't know maybe it's just me. But an anime for example would be the worst for YN, and for touhou too, and ZUN knows that.

This is how I felt about Cave Story. I was happy pixel was making money and stuff, but it went from this cute underground thing that spread among a few weeaboo websites, to just another Steam indie game created largely by Americans.

I don't know. It's not like these games weren't popular in their prime, because they were, but they lose their humility. They go from a strong cult following to just another franchise that's out there.

It is a serious thing. In the physical world a certain work may just be something to be watched or enjoyed or played alone, but what's more important is the way people perceive it. And many people think of something like Touhou Project as being more than a collection of media - they think of such things as being connected to a community. And they're not entirely wrong.

I kinda see what you mean, but I don't think Touhou is that good of an example. Touhou community has a lot of elements you need to ignore to enjoy it. All communities do, but for Touhou it is particularly true. When it comes to coping with popularity, Touhou fans should have lots and lots of experience.

I know how you feel. Mainstream popularity has the potential to ruin everything.

Speaking of Cave Story, Nicalis the company that made Cave Story 3D is/was working on porting Yatagarasu (the fighting game) to 3DS for some retarded reason. I have no idea why they didn't just localize the PC version.

Fucking idiots.

So only things that are known of by over 50% of the Japanese population are popular? So if something only had 10 million fans, it's not popular?

I wouldn't call it that. It's not like I think I'm better than people because of my interests. The problem is that I don't like seeing something I care about getting misappropriated. It's the same feeling I have against people who liked Yume Nikki simply because it was obscure instead of enjoying it for what it is. It's the same reason I don't like people who brag about using drugs, or people who regurgitate Touhou memes without having played a single game. I don't like tourists. I don't like insincerity.

When the substance becomes conflated with image, I feel the thing I care about is ignored or undermined. Unfortunately, mainstream exposure inevitably invites this. If I was a true hipster, I wouldn't have liked YN in the first place; it would be easy to drop and forget. The problem is that I DO like it and would hate to see people bastardize it by reducing it to fandom/memes/image/etc.
