Donations pour in for homeless man who returned diamond ring

http://www.cnn.com/2013/02/22/us/missouri-diamond-ring-returned/index.html

Well-wishers from around the world are opening their wallets to a homeless man who returned a diamond engagement ring to its rightful owner, after she accidentally dropped it in his donation cup.

Surprising behavior for an African. I guess some have learned to imitate human behavior.

On one hand I have a ton of respect for him for talking like that, on the other hand he's getting $95,000 for doing a simple good deed that anyone with a conscience would have done. I suppose the last part isn't his fault.

That isn't wisdom, though, it's common sense. What kind of world are we living in that you wouldn't expect the average person to have enough moral worth to return something like an engagement ring? It's a heartwarming act, certainly, but it's not worth press coverage, or $95,000. It's what should be expected of all people.

You try returning a diamond ring when you live on the fucking streets.

If it was just a normal guy who found, it'd be expected, but a homeless guy?

Morality is arbitrary, yes, but if all men lived morally, the world would be a better place for most everyone.

Don't you want to think someone would help you in your time of need? Don't you think you should help others in their time of need, if you can reasonably do so?

Tell me, objectively, what the moral way to act is. For example, if you think that people should be kind to each other, prove that your reasoning isn't arbitrary without resorting to fallacies.

You can't get a house for 95k, and most rental agreements require you to have a job, at least where I live. He might be able to rent with just a bank statement however. But I don't know about investing. There won't be much left to invest afterwards, not if you want fast returns like he would need. He has to get a job eventually and until then he has to live off of that.

>> No.10534788

The moral way to act is whatever results in the best results for everyone involved.

For example, take a case where you have five people needing organ transplants and a perfectly healthy person who is a match to all five people. The morally correct thing to do would be to euthanize him and use his organs to save the five people.
