But it really dropped the ball at 11&12

Maybe, I'm still hoping.
You should probably ignore what I said, I wouldn't want my opinions or later episodes to pull from your enjoyment in the current ones.
Please don't let what I said or what others said ruin the series or experience for you. Try to watch the incoming episodes with a clear mind. And try to avoid spoilers.

For the record, 9 is really good and one of the best episodes, so look forward to it. 10 isn't too bad either.

Part of me hopes that the change in artstyle, presentation, and general feel to everything might be a ploy related to what happens in the story or just a ruse altogether. And that the author has this under control. I'm still hoping.
All we can do is wait and see until the next episode. Since the quality has been kicked up, for better or worse, it just might take more time than the other episodes.

Why did the author think he needed to change? It was perfectly fine the way it was. It made me think it was Koishi herself who was retelling her story in some kind of coloring book or somthing to that effect.

I can't into moonrunes but from what I understood, Komeiji and Koichi are just the eyes so some kind of parasite, the story about them being cat and dog and the couple was before they went into Gensokyo, the couple story is what make Koichi a bit insane for starting and the moonbitch probably sent them to Gensokyo as spies for their big plan or something...

Even if the art of episode 13 was better than 12, I really do miss the old artstyle though.
