Well /jp/, I've decided after uni I'm moving to glorious nippon. But I need advice on things like where the least flood-exposed places are, and how moving and integrating to japanese society works.

Anybody who's gone through the process willing to give any advice?

Resident gaijin here.

As long as you can speak Japanese, you'll be fine. Don't talk on trains, don't be a loud asshole, just take it easy.

Also, finding as job teaching English is easy as fuck, as long as you look in the right places. There is an English school every few blocks in most cities.

But be prepared: Everything is expensive here. My friend lives in a room that is the size of a small car for 30000 Yen a month. Cigarettes are just over 400 Yen. But the train will be your biggest income killer. Try to find a job that pays for your transportation.

Best of luck.

I wouldn't know the first thing about JLPT. I literally came here last month to get away from America. But, my housemate says that it can help you get interviews at places that usually wouldn't give you a second look. It's worth taking, I'd say.

And me? I make about 1400 Yen a class. That's on the low end. The school I work at changes pay depending on the class, so sometimes it's more. I'd say it'd be worth it to get two jobs, if you wanted to work as an English teacher. It's barely enough to cover for myself. I'll get another one once I have settled in.

haha oh wow. GABA? get an ALT job. I get 250,000 a month, paid travel, end of contract bonus and full holiday pay. 12x50 minute classes a week.

charge 4,000 an hour for privates as well which brings in another 100,000 a month and my weekends are free. 55,000 a month 1DLK in namba. I save about 80,000 a month.

don't work for less than 200,000 a month OP. paying 1,400 is just taking advantage of people who will put up with anything to live in japan. even if they quit after a year (80% do) there is always another sucker to take over.

Nah, Treebell. I do know about GABA though. I'd complain, but the thing is I am only here until July. I need a way to kill time, mostly. Japan gets boring after the first few WOW IT'S SO DIFFERENT SHIT.

But if you had any advice on how not to get fucked over, it'd be really welcome. All my co-workers know they're getting ripped off. Housemate says that the President and CEO aren't exactly being peachy keen and clean, if you know what I mean.

erm, don't accept shit jobs?

even I am getting ripped off. my contract ends next month and I am applying for direct hires so no agency can take 2m a year from the real salary for doing nothing much. 5-5.5m a year with holiday pay is standard ALT salary. most companies keep your holiday pay and give you nothing.

I will look around. Would they need me to stay here longer than I plan on staying here?

The company I work for gave me a nice deal of letting me stay in a 45000 Yen room for 20000. I just hate how they won't let me use Japanese in my classes. If a kid doesn't understand something, how the fuck are they going to find out if I use English? My company just wants retarded gaijin who don't know the first thing about Japan. Pisses me off.

ALT isn't like that, is it? I just want a chance to practice my Japanese too. I need to study just as much as these poor children. ;-;

>I just want a chance to practice my Japanese

you're an english teacher. as soon as I let on that I can speak japanese the kids start talking to me in japanese. when I lie and feign ignorance they have to try and speak english. that's why I am there. to teach, not to practise japanese.

when I learned french and german at school the entire class was in those languages. too much japspeak is why they are shit at english.

if you are leaving in july you have no chance really. leaving in the middle of a school year is a pain. you can lie I suppose.

Get JLPT N1. Anything below is useless. You'll need it to apply for things like government scholarships for grad school or real jobs (English teaching is temporary migrant work - not a career).

>> No.10525795

English teaching is the -wrong- way to go if you actually want to live in Japan in the long term. Don't even go near it.

1. Get a real degree (not liberal arts bullshit)
2. Get JLPT N1, this is the bare minimum
3. Avoid other foreigners, 99% of them are terrible role models for you. Don't take any of their advice or listen their opinions. The vast majority can't read Japanese, at most of the time they're baby-talk level conversational. Just talk to the locals yourself and form your own opinion once you develop your Japanese skills.

I wish to open a german restaurant in japan in 5 or 6 years.
Most people say it could work out due the japs are crazy after the german culture. Money wouldn't be the problem for 6-10 months.

Problem is, I don't know much about the japanese bureaucracy.
Also I'm afraid that the restaurant will fail hard and I end up back in Naziland after my money runs out.

Opening a restaurant anywhere is literally the most guaranteed way to lose money in the world. No sort of business has a worse chance to survive for even a year.
You're going to want to get some restaurant management experience, at the very least.

Both of my parents were bankers, and you wouldn't believe some of the things they told me, but one of them is that startup loans for restaurants are pretty much guaranteed to default within the first year. Most banks won't even glance at anything to do with a restaurant unless it's been successful for over a year.
