I've been wondering about this for a while... I have been a type-moon fanboy ever since Tsukihime came out and there was a big hype around this game, mostly because of the dark atmosphere and the style Nasu uses to write his stories was kind of different from the rest of other visual novels out there. But since FSN came out and I had the chance to finish this game I found myself not so amused as I used to be about type-moon works, mostly because I got around to play various games from different studios(which I'm not going to tell the name since I know you guys will start trolling them, /jp/ is resentful and I know that very well) and they drew out my most inner emotions like I never experienced with a type-moon game before.

That being said, why is type-moon still the most popular and successful visual novel studio out there? Technically speaking their games are mediocre and Nasu's writing is unquestionably subpar. However it still get a fair amount of doujinshis, fan games, fanarts and not to mention their titles are VERY expensive. Tsukihime is probably the most expensive eroge out there.

Nsauverse has lots of powerlevels, very clear "types" of heroines, etc. to fanboy about and argue over, he writes lots of pretentious shit with a "dark" atmosphere so that teens/people who never really grew up think his stuff is intelligent and meaningful, and he can actually come up with some pretty damn cool action and GAR characters. The second one in particular must be what accounts for the success of his light novels, I think.

HAHAHA OH WOW! tip: Type moon is not the most succesful studio. And Tsukihime is expensive because there are few copies. Even more, type moon does not see a cent of a tsukihime sell. Leaf is more successful.
Even Key is more successful. The only professional games type moon have are fsn and fha. do you think it can compete with Kanon, Air( ported to almost every console) CLANNAD.( ported to almost every console) Little busters ( more selling game last year) And little busters ectasy is selling more than that.

You don't have to make an awesome work to be popular, you have to pander to mainstream and give something your viewers will be talking about for days. Most of us started playing Tsukihime because /a/ was talking about this game since ever and we didn't want to be out of the circle.

Has anybody read his books? (I guess a fair few will have read Kara no Kyoukai?) I only got about 15 pages into DDD and if I remember right he'd already managed to put in one bullshit discussion about god. I'm never again listening to the people who recommended me that.

I sort of I read about a few chapters of Kara no Kyoukai as well, but I was trashed at the time and all I've retained is something about flying ghosts or something and a scene where it was raining. That and the knowledge that I have no real desire to return to it.

Tsukihime is pretty cool though... if you can stand all that VAMPIRE LINEAGE EXPLANATION thing. It took me a whole month to finish this game, I wish I could skip most of its content but I can't stand missing any parts even if it's not really important.

What I really hate about Nasu is when he tries to be philosophical and, for example, describes the ceiling of Shiki's room and how bright it looks with the morning sunlight... seriously, philosophy is cool when the person in question knows what he's talking about, Nasu is like a drunkard telling stories about his past because he has nothing better to do and that's a pain in the ass to read. Uncultured kids might think this is meaningful but they're just too stupid to understand what's going on, thus the reason why they think it's deep.

I don't know why TM works are so popular either, but I don't really care. I have no hate for TM either, I just tend to ignore everything related to them.

I think one of the reasons why Type-Moon is so popular is the Nasuverse. It's one hell of a world to play in and debate.

Too bad we were all spoiled about Archer's identity before UBW came out. We would have been shitting bricks otherwise.

I played Tsukihime entirely, finished Fate route and never got around to play FSN again. I dunno, it doesn't interest me anymore. KnK movies are out but I never got enough interest to see them either. I'm also not so fond of all this philosophical thing Nasu likes to put on all his works, it sounds quite pretentious for me.

People around here says I'm a KEYfag(which isn't untrue) but what makes me fond of their works it's how they give us a touching story without trying to sound deep or meaningful, just being a normal romantic(or not) story.

Nasu comes up with some AWESOME ideas and concepts and characters, but his execution isn't so great. Not to mention his romances are kinda eh and his sex scenes any worse.

But yegod his universe and his characters rock. He just needs better execution. Or rather, he comes up with the idea and someone writes it for him.

Nah, I think he did a great job with the execution of Tsukihime. I dont really see how that could've been improved at all. As for FSN, he just really did not go into depth enough with FSN with the whole Master and Servant thing. I've read more than a few novels in my time, some brilliantly though out and written, and I can't even consider liking them more than I like TM stuff. To me it's all about how the feelings, the GAR moments, loving/hating/pitying/identifying with the characters, crying manly tears, etc. Trying to rationalize this stuff is useless, either you like or you don't.

Honestly, Nasu is pretty easy to understand when he gets into a philosophical mode, and he pretty much takes on the Japanese pseudo-existentialism that you see in almost all "avante-garde" animu these days. You'll have to define what you think the focus is and what exactly it's losing. Some of the focus loss is merely for the fact that the game is branching, and therefore recurring scenes seem jarring. This is true for practically every game/novel with multiple outcomes.

Type-Moon's work is passable with a few moments of FUCKING EPIC WIN, which makes it better than about 75% of the stories out there, I like how the different paths fill in the blanks until you finally get the whole story and the Nasuverse is probably one of the better fictional settings out there and it's easy to tell that a lot of work was put into it.
