I've been wondering about this for a while... I have been a type-moon fanboy ever since Tsukihime came out and there was a big hype around this game, mostly because of the dark atmosphere and the style Nasu uses to write his stories was kind of different from the rest of other visual novels out there. But since FSN came out and I had the chance to finish this game I found myself not so amused as I used to be about type-moon works, mostly because I got around to play various games from different studios(which I'm not going to tell the name since I know you guys will start trolling them, /jp/ is resentful and I know that very well) and they drew out my most inner emotions like I never experienced with a type-moon game before.

That being said, why is type-moon still the most popular and successful visual novel studio out there? Technically speaking their games are mediocre and Nasu's writing is unquestionably subpar. However it still get a fair amount of doujinshis, fan games, fanarts and not to mention their titles are VERY expensive. Tsukihime is probably the most expensive eroge out there.

SHMUPS =/= visual novels

One is all about story, and the other is all about shooting things. You're out of argument there.

>> No.1051018

Nsauverse has lots of powerlevels, very clear "types" of heroines, etc. to fanboy about and argue over, he writes lots of pretentious shit with a "dark" atmosphere so that teens/people who never really grew up think his stuff is intelligent and meaningful, and he can actually come up with some pretty damn cool action and GAR characters. The second one in particular must be what accounts for the success of his light novels, I think.

>> No.1051054

HAHAHA OH WOW! tip: Type moon is not the most succesful studio. And Tsukihime is expensive because there are few copies. Even more, type moon does not see a cent of a tsukihime sell. Leaf is more successful.
Even Key is more successful. The only professional games type moon have are fsn and fha. do you think it can compete with Kanon, Air( ported to almost every console) CLANNAD.( ported to almost every console) Little busters ( more selling game last year) And little busters ectasy is selling more than that.
gtfo.

>> No.1051055

Same reason why Dragon Ball Z is so popular.

You don't have to make an awesome work to be popular, you have to pander to mainstream and give something your viewers will be talking about for days. Most of us started playing Tsukihime because /a/ was talking about this game since ever and we didn't want to be out of the circle.

FSN is also expensive. It's a business strategy.

Kara no Kyoukai & Fate/Zero. Enough said.

The reason why Type-Moon is so popular is because Nasu created a Nasuverse that link all of the series together somehow.

>> No.1051105

I also used to think Type-moon was the best thing since sliced bread. But then I grew up.

I don't have any bias against Nasu, I just ignore his works since there's much better games around to play.

Are these really that good? I mean, everything they make is heavily hyped around TM communities there's no way you can measure if they're being serious or it's just blind fanboyism.

Didn't Nasu himself said KnK is shit?

>> No.1051163

Has anybody read his books? (I guess a fair few will have read Kara no Kyoukai?) I only got about 15 pages into DDD and if I remember right he'd already managed to put in one bullshit discussion about god. I'm never again listening to the people who recommended me that.

I sort of I read about a few chapters of Kara no Kyoukai as well, but I was trashed at the time and all I've retained is something about flying ghosts or something and a scene where it was raining. That and the knowledge that I have no real desire to return to it.

Tsukihime is pretty cool though... if you can stand all that VAMPIRE LINEAGE EXPLANATION thing. It took me a whole month to finish this game, I wish I could skip most of its content but I can't stand missing any parts even if it's not really important.

What I really hate about Nasu is when he tries to be philosophical and, for example, describes the ceiling of Shiki's room and how bright it looks with the morning sunlight... seriously, philosophy is cool when the person in question knows what he's talking about, Nasu is like a drunkard telling stories about his past because he has nothing better to do and that's a pain in the ass to read. Uncultured kids might think this is meaningful but they're just too stupid to understand what's going on, thus the reason why they think it's deep.

I don't know why TM works are so popular either, but I don't really care. I have no hate for TM either, I just tend to ignore everything related to them.

Nah, I think he did a great job with the execution of Tsukihime. I dont really see how that could've been improved at all. As for FSN, he just really did not go into depth enough with FSN with the whole Master and Servant thing. He did a good job with what we have now,but while developing it he just probably did not feel like venturing into those other paths that could have existed.

At least Tsukihime tells us about stuff, unlike most novels/movies/anime/manga that never explain anything well, trying to cover the writer not even knowing himself what's going on by being mysterious about stuff. Evangelion is a fine example.

Very fanatic TM fan here, I love Tsukihime, I love F/SN, love all the KnK movies that I've seen. I don't care whether Nasu's trying to be deep or just writing stuff he feels like writing. What matters are the feelings that stir in me when I read/watch this stuff. Nasu's writing is not particularly good, I give you TMhaetfags that. I don't care. I've read more than a few novels in my time, some brilliantly though out and written, and I can't even consider liking them more than I like TM stuff. To me it's all about how the feelings, the GAR moments, loving/hating/pitying/identifying with the characters, crying manly tears, etc. Trying to rationalize this stuff is useless, either you like or you don't.

Key notes:

Like what you like.
Anyone that's talking about what you like in a negative manner only matters if you bother caring about what they say.
Most of the time, they are idiots.

As always, I will denote that Nasu is not a literary god, Fate was not perfect by any means, and Melty Blood has almost as many versions as Guilty Gear.

However, that doesn't mean it sucks. It's just not perfect, like everything else in the world.

Honestly, Nasu is pretty easy to understand when he gets into a philosophical mode, and he pretty much takes on the Japanese pseudo-existentialism that you see in almost all "avante-garde" animu these days. Wow.

"I read books, therefore I can say whether someone else's ideas are uncultured." is basically the sum of your argument?

Let me put it to you this way: you know how intellectuals fawn over stuff like Goethe's Faust?

I read it. I understand it. I still think it's shit. The man basically wrote a book using most of his life that is pretty terrible.

That doesn't mean I call everyone that reads it and liked it "uncultured." It's just something I didn't like.

Everyone that discusses things in terms of "cultured" vs. "uncultured" is merely attempting to massage his own penis. Literature is not that simple.

But the thing is, Nasu isn't Goethe's Faust. It's clear Nasu makes analogies to buy time you don't even need to be much cultured to realize this. Not to mention the story seems to lose its focus at times, too much redundancy in both dialogues and monologues and the game ends abruptly with a weak conclusion. >It's clear Nasu makes analogies to buy time you don't even need to be much cultured to realize this.

Or maybe he likes making analogies. Analogous storytelling isn't exactly something he alone does.

>Not to mention the story seems to lose its focus at times,

You'll have to define what you think the focus is and what exactly it's losing. Some of the focus loss is merely for the fact that the game is branching, and therefore recurring scenes seem jarring. This is true for practically every game/novel with multiple outcomes.

"Let's see. There was that famous one in that country over there. A newly married woman in her twenties fell into a coma. She woke up after fifty years had passed, don't you know that one?"

In reply to Touko's words the new employee says "No," and shakes his head.

"Uh, how was that person when she woke up?"

"Extremely normal. As if she hadn't been sleeping for 50 long years. Her mind was revived just as it had been in her twenties, apparently it made her husband sad."

"--- Eh? Sad, how come? His wife's recovery should be a joyous occurrence."

"The thing is, her mind was still just as it was in her twenties, but her body had grown old into its seventies. Even in a comatose state, leaving something alive means that it will degrade, you can't do anything about that.

So this seventy year old granny is always urging her husband to go out as if she's till in her twenties. The husband has lived the seventy years normally so he's normal - the problem is the wife. Because fifty years have flowed past without her knowledge, she can't accept the fact no matter how you explain it. It's not that she doesn't want to accept it, she really can't conceive it to be the truth.

It's a tragedy among tragedies. They say that the lady who wanted to go out to play with that wrinkled face of hers was persuaded not to by her husband, who was in tears. They also say that he had this thought: If it was going to be like this, it would have been better if she hadn't woken up at all.

So, in other words, you end up leaving that person behind because you have changed, and they haven't, which is why marriages can break apart over something like one person being crippled mentally. The other person just can't cope with a person who isn't the person they knew anymore.

Pretty obvious, but it is a Nasu story.

>> No.1055266

"...... I think sins are things people willingly burden themselves with. A burden that one casts on themselves according to their views, that is what a sin is. The more compassion you have, the heavier a burden your sin becomes. The more common sense you have, the heavier a burden your sin becomes. Asagami Fujino's sins become heavier and more painful as she gets happier."

>> No.1055273

"I don't think anyone exists without a sense of sin. It just means that their sins are lighter to bear, but they are still there. A small sin within their small scope of compassion. For us it might seem trivial, like tripping on a road; but for that person, it becomes a burden. Even the small pain for us becomes an unpleasant feeling for those with small compassion. No matter the weight, the meaning of a sin is the same."

... Yes. For example, Minato Keita was probably frightened to the point of insanity because of the realization of his sins. He cannot atone for his regret, sense of guilt, fear, or impatience; but all he can do is try to atone for them.

"Certainly, it must be easier to not be responsible for your sins socially. But if no one punishes you for your sins, you have to carry them yourself. A guilty conscience is not something that goes away, right? You have memories of it. Since no one forgave you for it, you cannot forgive it yourself. The wound in your heart never heals and will continue to hurt. Like her sense of pain remaining, the wound would never heal. As you say, a soul does not have a physical form...... so I don't think a wound on it can be treated.

Shiki is listening silently. Maybe because I looked up Fujino's past, I'm unusually poetic. Shiki suddenly leaves the cover of the warehouse and goes out into the rain.

"So you're saying this. The more common sense you have, the more sense of sin you have. That's why there's no bad people in this world. But I have no such thing. Could you let such a person run unbounded??"

Now that she says so, that is indeed true. Before you can call Shiki good or bad, she has a small concept of common sense.

"I see. Then I guess it can't be helped. I'll have to burden all your sins then."

It's not that deep, nor is it that convoluted. People with more self-conscious feel more guilt. Someone with no sense of a self wouldn't feel any guilt.

It's why you reduce soldiers to instruments that can carry out orders: something that's broken down to the point of denying the self before the desires of the group won't feel guilt when acting.
