As I have stated before, I usually pick challenges from things people around me (/jp/, the uploader, a few IRC channels) are doing, unless there are requests. I might also just pull some challenges out of my hat, in the case there is nobody to inspire.

You must also remember that with the special challenges, my variety is really low due to having to pick only from a select few things. I would personally like to use max grazing, stage practice scoring and such things in the specials, but as I was requested earlier not to do so, I'm trying not to.

Obviously, suggestions and ideas are always welcome.

The hitboxes are always circles, which is why knives have such bullshit hitboxes, the hilt is the dangerous part. I've come to the conclusion that lunatic is an absolutely shit tier mode. It's nothing but memo. That is why time played > everything else for these games. These bullets on lunatic cannot be read, they're way too fast. I'm talking about all the games on lunatic too. It's idiotically fast even on stage 1, which makes it all the worse. That is a piss poor way to increase the games difficulty. What should have happened is exactly what got done to hard mode aka more bullets for denser patterns, but the speed of the bullets is largely untouched, or increased just enough to not be unreadable.

sounds like something gus would write. therefore, it can't be taken serious.

it's true to some extent, sure. "natural talent" is a mere excuse not to push oneself farther. but it doesn't need to be to the point of where everything turns into a masochistic endeavor. I honestly believe that a lot of superplayers actually have fun with what they're doing. saying that every really good player walked through a metaphorical pit full of hot coals to get where they are now is just a mere generalization. He may feel that way, but it shouldn't be that way

What is also true is that shmups aren't meant to be played for two weeks and then never touched again. but that needs to have the prerequisite that you had fun with the game. Getting a 2-all in Dai-ou-jou is awesome. Now, did you have fun doing it? If yes, you will likely play the game more to improve the run or try your hands at some scoring or challenges. if you didn't, you'll probably move on to the next game and ask yourself the same question after clearing it. I believe that this goes on until you have found a game you can really treasure and give it your all.

which actually leads me to something that I think is wrong. The author of that "essay" always goes into the issue of scoring. And while it's probably true that you'll, at one point, try it in your game of choice, I don't think you have to to be actually good. After a simple 1cc or 2-all, there are always things you can do outside of scoring. Challenge runs are a great way to play STGs. They often may require less time, but can still be as impressive and satisfying as a high-level scoring run. There are some standard challenges like No Bomb runs, but you can also do some really game specific challenges which add some spice to the game. and eventually, you might want to try to NMNB the entire game.

I believe you need to love what you're doing, or else you'll eventually just quit.

Not to mention that classy bomb spamming for the bosses. It probably sounds like I'm being sarcastic but that isn't true, I really do like that style.
You can bet I'm going to pull something similar off when I get around to playing that abomination of a game.
Anyway, there you have it faggot UFO lovers, a replay showing how you can trivialize that poorly constructed joke of a game on lunatic by abusing UFO screen clears as well as the crazy powerful bombs.

Sorry, I guess you're right. You do have to memorize a couple things.

1. If there's a boss on the screen, press X. Don't worry about running out of resources. You can die twice and still have max lives by the end of stage 3.

There's an entire spectrum of how people define "memorization". For some, it means 100% static patterns. For others, they'll even complain about static series of events or anything that can be partially manipulated.

Trance would be fine if it had at least some risk. It should have worked like PCB borders so you still actually have to dodge. Infact think of how much better that would be for people that play for score. So basically while you're shooting shit and collecting spirits in trance, you get a much bigger score value than if you weren't in trance. it would last the same amount of time it lasts now, only you'd want to continue dodging stuff to ensure the trance doesn't end prematurely so you could continue to reap the benefits of getting the increased score.

Someone has.

I can't remember all of the details, but it features being able to use a manual trance after 1 spirit gauge was full instead of needing all 3. Bullets no longer become transparent during trance, since, after all, you still have to dodge them now. All characters have spirits move toward them during trance, not just Reimu. Marisa's movement speed is returned to normal. Entering trance clears all bullets on the screen, which invalidates a spell bonus, but entering a spell with trance already active does not. My memory is hazy on the details of exiting trance prematurely. Getting hit kills you (or maybe just ends it and clears the screen?). Bombing ends a trance.

Marisa has always been a high power straight-line character, it's her motto. It's her job description.

Shame on t-98 next though. I started with anex and it had problems with sound channels and frame skipping. I have none of these problems with t-98.

orreries sun?*googles* yeah, something like that

And nah, while the boss battles she has in both LLS and TsoeW(moreso) have some bullets that go straight the main danger is sideways attack.

I think I'll reboot and try again, or with some Neko thingy emulator, but iirc it wasn't successful. Frameskipping is the phrase I was looking for, and is what makes tracing paths very hard.

As for sound with anex...For some reason I can either get sound with touhou or sound with flash. Not both, and first one active dominates.

And pulseaudio package shuts down the sound completely for 2hõ

Favorite danmaku? master spark. Damn, was I impressed when I first encountered that(I knew it was coming but still died).

Oh yeah, I've been meaning to ask.

Are there any shmups with more bullets (or at least on par with how many bullets) as the following:

- Bug Princess 2 Arrange Ver. 1.01 Ultra
- DoDonPachi Resurrection Arrange A Ura Loop
- Crimzon Clover Unlimited

I guess Bug Princess CAVE Matsuri Version Arrange Ultra would be good, but there's got to be more than that.

Also, fun fact - just about every CAVE game has an English title sitting somewhere in the tiles. I'll list what I know -
- Dangun Feveron - Fever S.O.S.
- DoDonPachi Dai-Ou-Jou - DoDonPachi Blissful Death
- Ketsui ~Kizuna Jigoku Tachi~ - Ketsui
- Mushihime-Sama - Bug Princess
- Pink Sweets: Ibara Sorekara - Pink Sweets: After Ibara (Found this in the TGA viewer)
- Mushihime-Sama Futari - Bug Princess 2
- DoDonPachi Dai-Fukkatsu - DoDonPachi Resurrection
- I'm pretty sure DoDonPachi SaiDaiOuJou is DoDonPachi Maximum Death, but I'm not 100% sure.

...But I'm being 100% serious. How about I name off what I don't like -

- Barely any bullet pattern layering, even on bosses. CAVE usually has at least two layers of bullets on every boss or midboss attack pattern, plus some large mooks also have multiple layers. Crimzon Clover goes so far as to have multiple attack layers on some 1HP enemies.
- Many bullet patterns by bosses and mid-bosses are repeated. This would be okay if it weren't for the fact, as I mentioned above, that most attack patterns only have one layer. As a result it's a massive borefest.
- Presentation (Graphics, music, etc.) are not exactly bad, but they're certainly sub-par. Before you say, "But it's a DOUJIN game!!", recall that Crimzon Clover is also one and happens to be on-par with CAVE's quality.
- Antialiased projectiles. This may seem laughable but any time a projectile has smoothed edges there's often a question of where the hitbox is. CAVE goes out of its way to remedy this, to the extent of giving the player a visible hitbox, but Touhou seems awful confusing in that matter.
- Incredibly boring player, boss, and enemy designs. I ultimately don't care about powerlevels, a dumb-looking mouse girl is not on par with Suzaku 08 (Or a Venus Flytrap for that matter) in any version of the universe. In fact, why is the midboss the same as the boss? Whatever happened to variance in the enemies you face?
- Many of the enemies have a similar feel to Harihacks in the original DoDonPachi - they feel like they're just trying to kill you and get it over with, not spam bullets. Granted, CAVE remedied this later, but apparently Touhou hasn't figured out that's not how you make a danmaku game anymore.

I could probably name more, but I'll just wait for someone to put up a response of some kind. Like I said, I'm 100% serious.

I will also say that Marisa is actually pretty decent, I wouldn't mind playing her in some other shmup.

Compare the development time of any Touhou game and Crimzon Clover. I'm not using this as an excuse, but it's not entirely fair to compare these two things on these grounds.

>Antialiased projectiles. This may seem laughable but any time a projectile has smoothed edges there's often a question of where the hitbox is.
I don't entirely agree with this. I agree that Touhou will use some silly blending modes and other shenanigans to make bullets difficult to read, but there shouldn't really be any problems with hitboxes. Bullet density isn't even high enough in these games to worry about it most of the time. I suppose Touhou does have more hixbox mystery when compared to a game like, say, Futari, where every bullet has the same, extremely tiny hitbox.

>>10531147
>What would be the best then?
Not that person (since UFO is one of my favorite games), but PCB and IN have pretty lovely scoring systems. MoF is alright too. You're not going to find assreamingly difficult patterns no matter where you look, so don't go in expecting much in that department.

I won't argue against you since I'm shit and my opinion doesn't matter, but I'll agree with one thing:

>Antialiased projectiles.
You'll often find that hitboxes are misrepresented; off-center and oddly sized for some characters, bosses, and projectiles. You'll get used to it over time, though, so it becomes a minor thing.

Yeah man, that is secondary as HELL.

The best Touhou game you'd like would most likely be SoEW. Forget all fancy post Touhou 2 shit, this is where the peak is at. The rest of the series is simply just riding on a wave of awwesome set by this game. Let me list you why-

- Layers? This game is good for those. Not only do bullets layer with each other, but even the background and enemy spawns are going into the stray and you have to dodge them as well just to be sure. Also, the penultimate boss has some next level shit and you have to dodge her danmaku while also dodging her options which spawn the bullets. Sick.

- There are no repeated patterns or shit like that, bosses choose a random attack from their pool and fuck you in the ass with it. To hell with boring memo, this is the true RNG.

- If you wish for good and realistic quality, you probably should play this game. The enemies are so well made and the bullets look so neat you would not believe it. You can't simply see all of it at times, that's how awesome the graphics are. A true classic.

- The bullet hitboxes are as they are. No guessing around. No fancy shit. Just pure looking at stuff and dodging it. No aliases, the bullets are who they are: bullets.

- Design? Man, this game has got it all. Sick star orbs from the deep hell, six mystic lovecraftian balls. And the stage one has a fucking tank. A. Fucking. Tank.

- Spamming bullets, here it is. Forget about killing the player, here the screen gets so full with shit you wouldn't believe it. Truely random and cool danmaku.

I could probably name more, but I'll just have to go and play the game. I'm 100% serious, it's the best Touhou.
