Seinarukana isn't actually going through re-translation. The new translator's simply going over the old translator's stuff to make sure it's consistent. Which is good because re-translating would take much much longer.

I want to say something about moogy, so I'll do it here.

>vndb.org/t3705#21
I think moogy knows exactly why everyone is so mad at him, yet he deliberately avoids it. I think it'd be pretty hard not to realize that moogy stealing Dra+Koi and working on it will take significantly longer than if it was just left in ixrec's hands. It has nothing to do with "demanding instant results," it's about wanting results in general. If moogy doesn't understand this I have no clue what to think anymore. I mean, if anyone knows JAST's track record, it is him. Despite all this, he acts as if he is doing us a favor by gracing us with his miles better translation project, when in fact nobody cares for it or even wants it over ixrecs (besides maybe his TLwiki crew of dicksuckers). How somebody can become so self entitled? I have no clue.

Also, if he thinks people who can't read Japanese flocking to any translation is stupid or is what shouldn't happening, then that in itself is pretty dumb.

I feel like he specifically decides to only argue on vndb because he knows it's userbase is completely retarded. It's just some twisted way to reassure him that he is correct in doing what he does. Moogy, do you really think winning an argument against the retards swimming through vndb's discussion boards is enough to reassure yourself that your ideals are correct or for the greater good? And you act like everyone else has low standards.

Maybe I should choose a better word here, maybe full of himself or arrogant instead.

That is senseless. The entire point of what I was saying was that he feels like we should be glad that he made the translation take significantly longer because it will be 100x better than ixrec's.

>> No.10498984

>>10498906
Wow. That post...

>Also, you guys are a bunch of ungrateful faggots, holy shit.
We are ungrateful for Moogy stopping Ixrec from translating for us? We should be grateful that Moogy saved us from the terrible fate of having Dra+KoI translated for us to read? Yes, people are frequently ungrateful towards fan translators. Yes, people are frequently ungrateful towards Ixrec. But why should I be grateful towards Moogy, who hasn't translated jack shit and is even preventing something from being translated right now?

>I spent hours a day working on the translation for nearly a month straight, I'm not about to let someone else fuck it up by not putting in nearly as much effort.
So Ixrec is "not putting in nearly as much effort" in translating? Is someone who, despite having been in the community for significantly longer than Ixrec, has not actually translated anything, saying that a person who has been dedicating a ridiculous amount of time every day since 2009 to translating VNs is putting in 'not nearly as much effort'??

Yes, Ixrec would still put considerably less effort into translating the game.

The thing with languages is that you can't translate them 1:1 to other languages, especially languages like Japanese leave a lot of room for personal style. Advocates of literal translations are often criticizing something as mistake even if it is just a paraphrase with the same meaning. Sure, I could be wrong in this case, but I've never seen Ixrec fucking up really bad (i.e like the Clannad translation, where they sometimes couldn't even get the subject right), my issues with him are mostly for style reasons.

Okay, one thing that needs to be cleared up first: what exactly happened (the drama). The_paper was an active contributor to the Rewrite error reporting thread on the Amaterasu forums. Threads like that are meant for reporting typos, grammar fuckups, mistranslations, etc. At this point, it should be noted that The_paper has also done editing work for other projects (I know at least she worked on Remember11 as editor), but is not affiliated with Amaterasu in any way.

Among the_paper's error reports were many issues that were not errors per se, but rather suggestions to improve the text. Basically, where the thread is meant for QC, she was also doing editing. As editing is frequently a subjective thing and Amaterasu already has an editor, Sheeta (the editor) posted the following message:
>Try and stick to actual errors rather than "editing suggestions", everyone. It makes our jobs a lot easier.

After the_paper submitted another report, Ixrec followed up with all the tact of a bull in a china shop:

>Okay, I've fixed everything in those posts that's an actual error.
>
>The thing is, way, way too many of those "errors" are just subjective editing suggestions. Like Sheeta said, you really need to cut back on that. Between this thread and the other places people contact me I spend more time checking/thinking/deciding if something is actually an error than I do correcting any of them. Some of your earlier posts were so bad about this I gave up trying to find real errors in them.
>
>Not to mention it'll take you months to finish reading Rewrite at the rate you appear to be going (can't remember if your other posts covered the rest of the game since there's been tons of them), and there's no way I'm waiting that long to get a final patch out.

The result of this rather blunt post was the_paper taking offense and posting an angry reply and Ixrec being oblivious as to why she's so angry. (Quoth his twitter: "That awkward feeling when what you thought was a reasonable request gets interpreted by everyone in the vicinity as a "temper tantrum".)

Here's (picture) an example of the_paper's reports; this one is for the entirety of Kotori route (one line omitted due to size). I would say Sheeta and Ixrec made a valid point that she's doing work she wasn't asked to do and that it was counterproductive despite her good intentions. It's just extremely difficult to tell an enthusiastic, well-meaning person they are not being helpful, and Ixrec is probably the person least capable of telling someone that.

As for the translation errors - as you can see, it's just the occasional careless mistake. He's no pro translator, but he isn't bad by any means.

1/10th of her total reports, yes. That's why I specifically stated it was her Kotori route report; this is the entirety of what she reported in Kotori route minus one line. It's an indication of the frequency of the errors; Amaterasu has unfortunately removed the detailed stats, but IIRC each route was roughly 300KB in size. That's the amount of errors she reported in that much text.

>I see them [...]
That's clearly an editing issue. The entire meaning is in the sentence; whether or not it's grammatically correct is editing, not translation. Blame Sheeta if you dislike the phrasing.

>armed with guns [....]
I'm pretty sure this is a case where the Japanese uses the same verb for the guns and the balaclava, and the 'concealing their faces' addition was just the_paper's. Unless I'm wrong on that part, this is entirely an editing thing.

>the last one
Again, editing. Considering how Japanese works, most likely 'soul' is never mentioned in the original line and just derived from context; in English, it does not work out as well, hence the_paper's suggestion to re-specify that.

I really need to get my hands on the original script to compare properly.

My Japanese is utterly terrible, but I'll have a go at it:

>//<10714> 顔を隠し、自衛隊のような格好をして、全員が銃で武装していた。
><10714> They're dressed like self-defense force troops, armed with guns and balaclavas.
'Concealing their faces' is definitely present in the sentence. However, I'm not seeing any specification of balaclavas being used here? Was that taken from context?

>//<11655> 「長く生きた魔物の中には、まれに魂のようなものが宿ることがあるみたい…」
><11655> 「Though apparently familiars that have been around for a very long time can sometimes acquire them...」
Does not specify 'soul'.

>//<6318> 「あたしが宿り木に触れてドルイドの知識を得た時、〈鍵〉を守れって要求された」
><6318> 「When I touched the mistletoe and learned about the druids, I was asked to protect the Key.」
Key phrase here is ドルイドの知識 which can mean pretty much anything involving druids and information (as long as the two are somehow related, obviously). "Knowledge of the druids" would reflect the ambiguity well; it could either be knowledge of the druids' existence, or the knowledge the druids passed on. Both Ixrec's and Paper's translations are correct.

>//<6770> 「いるよ。オカ研のネタでもきてた木人ってやつとか?」
><6770> 「Yeah. Like the Treeman the Occult Club looked for.」
I'm having difficulty parsing this sentence. Can someone who actually knows proper Japanese try this one?

>//<11574> 「で、気がついたら…あたしは、森に転がってた」
><11574> 「The next thing I knew, I was rolling along the forest floor.」
Again, both Ixrec's and Paper's translations are correct. It could either say he was rolling along the forest floor, or tumbling towards the forest floor.

You people need to remember that translation is inherently an act of destruction. It's all there, in the theory. Read some Nabokov.

You see, Eric has attempted to personally co-opt the business of translation into his self-operated machine, expediting the death of the whole animal. I'm in no disagreement with any sensible person on the root matter: We all know the scene needs to die. What I am critical of is Ixrec's shameful maneuvering to take credit for the long, hard work of others. Moogy-heika-dono and our very good friend Peter Payne have been doing this with more devotion, for much longer. Honorable dovac (peace be upon him) finally pulled the only string he had to give... The twilight is ending sooner than we thought, which is why we are seeing this pathetic battle for the glory. Who will take the blame in the end? The old axis of power, an upstart pretender like Ixrec, or seemingly deluded idealists like Cudder and Aaeru.
But will there even be any glory to steal? Will our world die a complacent death, unnoticed, will we be left longing for a hero like Gipface to return from the dead and end our misery? Or maybe we're already dead?

If you're under some kind of self-imposed deadline for accepting reports, then how about making a note of that in the first post. Uh, I thought his point, which I share, is that when you don't know Japanese you're putting your trust in translators that they do their job right. Although unlike him, I would still expect at least decent English.

Anyway when you find out a translation was inaccurate, you realize what you read may not have been the real story so that trust is broken.

True, maybe that doesn't matter if you enjoyed reading the story you were given, but it just feels shitty. You want to read the actual visual novel, not some pseudo story a translator wrote up.

I understand we should just learn Japanese if it bothers us because then we'll know the real story every time, but then... what's the point of a translation if it's not truly translated?

Anyone that translates from japanese to english should have great skills in both languages. And you forget my point, you're saying that you can't be fluent on a foreign language. IIRC, the translator of Symphonic Rain and YU-NO wasn't a native English speaker and both turned out better than 90% of translations out there.

Well, even in the case of Code Geass Lost Colors they're still expecting to only worry about insertion when the whole thing is done, so that's not too bad for a work-in-progress.

It's the very definition of being retarded and is exactly why the translation will never ever be inserted in the game. Have fun copy-pasting each line from pic related and other over 9000 MS Word files to the script manually.

What, are you serious?

I know English is TakaJun's second language, but if that's true of the Symphonic Rain TL then I take my hat off to him (her?); that was professional console game-quality work.

Although both sides are fucking retarded, I must admit that somewhere deep inside the pile of shit that Aaeru posted over there lies a seed of truth. That is, fan translators have no right whatsoever to put any restrictions on what they publish unless they have an official permission to do so from VN creators. Any fan translator disagreeing with this is indeed a hypocrite, and even more so if he/she involves "we're against piracy" argument in that.

I highly doubt that Otomate would ever give the translation rights for free to any company, let alone those guys. It's not some [whoever released Koenchu!] after all. Feel free to prove me wrong with a direct quote, though.
I can't be bothered to read through those walls of texts where so much is written and so little is actually said ever again.
