If you were to actually go to Gensokyo, what would you do to survive? Obviously, if you were to make it to the human village before the youkai ate you, you'd have to go from somewhere, right? Who would you suck up to attempting to gain abnormal abilities? What would you exploit?

Me? Become a magician. Seems like the easiest way to gain abilities, and since I'm me I'll obviously be an anti-social fuck anyway and won't have the Internet to save me, so it looks like researching magic all day is the way to go so I‘ll be able to defend myself when Rumia, Chen or Cirno decide to murder me. Maybe I'll try to discover how to emulate the abilities displayed by dragons. Yeah. Become God. That's always fun, right?

I would have to:
1) Create lots of IEDs and attempt to eliminate large youkai or super human strongholds (eintei, shrine, forest, mansion...). It won't do a thing to immortals, but it'll kill most of the inhabitants.
2) kill tenshi and spread her blood around my home. Keeps the youkai away...i hope.
3) Poison their water supply, it'll eventually reach their food supply as well and it should eliminate a good chunk of gensokyo's population.

Probably stay at the Hakurei shrine and do the cleaning in exchange for food/bedding/protection. Learn how to purify/seal/stick talismans to youkai.

Maybe set up a Christian church (hey, if other gods can exist in Gensokyo) later and lead converted humans on some sort of crusade against youkai/Suwako.

Okay, the obvious answer is to bring some technology or skill to Gensokyo that no one else has seen and that's extremely useful to them. Also know how to actually build or produce whatever that thing is so people will be indebted to you. Otherwise, you'll probably just end up working as a farmhand for some asshole or begging for money in the village or something.

If so, you just take a bullet mold, keep the casings and find a bronzeworker int he human village to make new blasting caps to attach to the shells.

Gunpowder isn't so hard to make if you know where to get the materials, and just asking around the human village should get you some hints.

If all else fails, take blueprints for the technology required.

You can go from mideival tech to high tech pretty quickly if you know all the steps in between.

Of course, you'd probably still be dead, but at least you'd die knowing you brought firearm technology and fairly modern metalworking technology to gensokyo. Now the humans have machine guns and shit.

Technology > Youkai. Both Earth and the Lunarians have proven this. Gensokyo was a bad idea to begin with: they just trapped all the youkai in one place. They're ripe for the slaughter. All of the youkai will either end up extinct or will retreat into the underground seen in Subterranean Animism. The only youkai that really stands a chance is Yukari, and even then everything will fall apart for her eventually, after all, Reimu will be fighting for the human side (among other gifted humans). This is just what humanity does, and the youkai have been asking for a beatdown for awhile, attacking and eating humans and all. If this wasn't their ultimate fate, then they would never have disappeared from the outside world.

Well, Gensokyo was probably made because youkai needed a safe haven once the shit began to fly on Earth. It's doubtful it'd be the only one either- such legendary locales as Atlantis, Mu, Shangri-La, and El Dorado may also be sheltering populations of youkai and gifted humans. He's saying that ZUN was involved in quite a bit of Seihou and fully supports it's canonicity. The only difference between the two is that ZUN works on Touhou practically if not entirely alone while Seihou is kind of like IaMP and SWR.

Also of note is that while "the weird faith system" was indeed an issue as you say, it was said alongside the fact that youkai could no longer handle humans who had become far stronger than them due to technology (something particularly spoken about in the yet-to-be-translated Oni section of Perfect Memento).

Seriously, Seihou's version of Earth seems to be the most likely one. Why would ZUN retcon an entire game as opposed to a single image or a line of text? Besides, Touhou has never truly been about story as much as it has been about danmaku, and what little importance the story does carry is based on a couple themes and the ultimate outcome of whatever game's conflict. Actually, this has only occurred visibly in MoF, so you can’t even take that seriously (as if you were supposed to in the first place).

In any case, the fan base has pretty much made the entire story up till now, so fine, believe what you want. I still think Earth has VIVIT and I have my reasons for believing so. If you don’t like my evidence, fine.

Yukari frantically attempts to gather the remaining youkai in an attempt to escape, but, unfortunately, she is inevitably intercepted by the human armies. Yukari prepares to fight, but Ran takes her place, telling her to go on with the remaining youkai since she is the only one who knows where they can truly be safe. Ran fights valiantly, but as Yukari moves farther away her power weakens until she is easily incapacitated. The humans, triumphant, cut off all of her tails and rape her before ending her life.

Yukari is able to successfully hide what remains of the youkai in the underground world, saving them for years to come, and, her work completed, she can find no other alternative path for herself other than to avenge her faithful Ran. Resurfacing, she is able to easily wipe away dozens of battalions with little effort, however, even she knows that she cannot stand against the armies for long. She continues the battle, or, rather, the massacre until a sudden twist stops her in her tracks: an army of VIVITs, powered by Saboten Energy, finally confront her and beat her down to a pulp, her final words protesting the unfairness of humanity’s atrocious acts.
