Lots of the newcomers brought in by flashy CGs and pretty (aka androgynous) girls aren't all going to go back and play every single game in the series. There is a significant portion of people that simply refuse to play games without fancy graphics anymore.

GBA, it has a couple new classes and bonus bosses and perhaps more importantly, introduces another main villain that was previously only mentioned in background as a superboss, giving him official art.

Its main con is that it has hideous portraits for your party. Faris...not so sexy here

Ironically, you should try the much lambasted FFX-2, because even though the other elements are pretty laughable, the gameplay is actually essentially the spiritual successor to FFV, which isn't exactly known for story either. It's in fact quite similar except that you can change jobs in the middle of battle, and there's magical girl transformation to go along with it that you can optionally turn off.

I have to agree with you on that. While FFX-2 was shit encrusted shit, the battle system was deliciously nostalgic and the bonus transformation scenes were a huge plus. That and changing during battle made the game so much more dynamic. Some enemies changed their tactics and you could alter your line-up to defeat them. Such a shame that all of the heroines became sluts, and the story was godawful
