Most of the sentences here are correct, gramatically, with a considerable amount of slangs. Also, you can tell that someone is using google translate if he uses too much polite grammar. Google translator loves polite grammar.

Talking to Japanese people I got used to use polite language on the Internet. To an English speaker it may be hard to notice but the Japanese are very, *very* sensitive to the wording you use when talking to them. If you don't know who you're talking with, don't use slang, use polite forms like 〜ます, 〜ください, 〜くれませんか, 君 instead of お前, etc. It doesn't mean you're using Google Translate.

Most people who try to sound native here try too hard to use slang and colloquial "not in books" Japanese but just come off as an immature kid from 2ch's VIP (analog to 4chan's /b/).

>> No.10381589

>> No.10381615

>>10381600
Well since we're in an anonymous board, formality isn't as imporrtant as when talking with someone by e-mail or Twitter, but in /jp/ we usually are very formal when speaking in English, so I don't know why some people would try to sound as informal as they can in Japanese.

>> No.10381616

>>10381573
I just try to use the Japanese that I read. I read it a lot. 2channel and NND. I'm quite aware that it's casual and weird, but if I try to speak more formally I just sound weirder simply because I do not have the practice.

Japanese people speak casually. On the net at least, where there's not really any need to have much of lasting exchange. I'm pretty sure these posts are Japanese >>10381187 >>10381217 >>10381220, and they aren't using 敬語. This guy's >>10381152 Japanese seems awesome enough to be Japanese but he probably isn't.

I like my English to be quite correct but I do enjoy me a stupid epic maymay every once in a while on the interbutts.

It's a question of exposure and experience. If I'm chatting with a Japanese one-to-one I'll usually try to fumble through ですます, but I haven't had much experience with that. I'm happy fucking around on casual Japnet.
