Besides being Western I wouldn't really consider it an eroge. Those games all had covers that said they were for adults and stuff but they seemed more humorous than erotic. I've been playing Sierra's Leisure Suit Larry games lately and I get the same vibe. They're like Carry On films--suggestive and risque, but not really something you're going to masturbate to.

I really doubt it. Not that it isn't a common paraphilia, but it's too specific. It was probably just bishoujos with large-ish breasts. Those are what you normally see in 70s/80s cartoons.

Japan's version of child and what child entails is different than the west, and keep in mind people didn't start throwing a fit about this stuff until recently.
In the Tale of Genji, Genji fucks every person from ages 13 to like 70, and its probable kids were doin' it in old times and since Japan is the way it is, its ideals remain unchanged. I'm pretty sure there was no discrimation about who you fucked, hence the amount of weird porn that still gets churned out from Japan today.

Some old computers used "fat pixels". Basically you'd have, say, a 160x240 array of pixels, but you'd stretch it to 320x240 to achieve the correct aspect ratio. This way you're basically halving the amount of memory you need for the framebuffer.

Yeah, most early Japanese computers offered screen modes with thin pixels (trading off color resolution for horizontal resolution), in order to provide enough resolution to make kanji legible. By contrast, you don't need much resolution to make the various western alphabets legible, so more effort was put into color resolution and fancy graphics hardware that supported sprites and scroll offsets.

On CRTs, no matter what the horizontal resolution is, the image gets stretched to fill the width of the screen. For example, the resolution used in this screen is actually 640x200, but in order to make it look correct on a modern display, the image had to be pixel-doubled vertically.

Since artists had a lot of resolution but little color to work with, classic Japanese PC games were extensively dithered.

On the subject of these 80s Japanese computer games, here is an awesome tumblr full of animated pics ripped from them: http://fmtownsmarty.tumblr.com/

I love the look of 80s computer graphics: the only thing missing when viewing these images is the actual 15khz CRT display, with real scanlines. I recently got an Ikegami 20 inch RGB 15khz pro CRT monitor ($5k list price in 2010), and plan to feed the output of my lowres emulators into it via a hardware scan converter for the authentic 80s experience.

I like the "electronic" lo fi sound of these synth chips, as opposed to simply recording a symphony orchestra or such. The limitations of such sound hardware led to some very creative work.

I similarly enjoy the sound of pioneering electronic music groups like YMO: the early analog synths (YMO used the Prophet 5 extensively, along with modular moogs et al.) sounded wonderful. Sometimes the latest tech is not always the best.

I paid next to nothing for a unit built to pretty much mil spec quality. The monitor bezel is basically a billet of solid steel - Ikegami built this thing according to "best practices" all the way - it's nearly 100 pound mass would flatten a toy LCD.

CRT is the display technology of the gods, anyway. Tens of kilovolts in the power supply (and enough capacitance in the tube to fuck you up)? Check. No "native resolution"? Check. Just a marvel of physics: high vacuum, electron guns and the fucking glowing phosphor.
