You can't make something like a roomba much wider or it'll get in the way of people and be unable to get into corners. By making it taller, you can expand the dust cache, give it a larger battery, or more advanced electronics without making it any more obtrusive. All you sacrifice is the ability to clean under couches and whatnot with high clearances.
