Have you seen what passes for "art".
Zun might draw horribly on a mechnaical level- and even then much better than some- but there alot more to the drawings thatn just that.

One of the biggest prides of touhou is the fact that its done completely by one man, else it would lose alot of its artistic merit.

Oh, and then ingame stuff, the colors, the patterns, the backgrouns are all extremely well done, so i would say he just likes to draw the characters this way.
Maybe for some sense of abstractness, maybe for the open interpretation.
Or maybe because he just feels that way.
It takes nothing away from the games, of the things i would change about touhou, the artstyle is the least of my worries.

Pic related it's a book about cyberspace and shit and that cover art was the first book cover drawn using a computer or something I don't know but it looks cool and William Gibson probably had no involvement in it but it makes the book slightly better.

Marketing is important. If you care, learn about the book in which case you won't have to judge it by its cover (which is basically what the saying is getting at), otherwise, feel free to. There are some real fuck-ups but people would buy The Great Gatsby even if the cover art was replaced with a giant turd.

Well, since he's been drawing regularly for over a decade, maybe his drawings could be better (I think he's great at rendering though) but try looking at it this way, he's not forcing anyone to buy his things, he's not stealing anyone's money. People CHOOSE to buy his games.

Unless he's defrauding them and ripping off the music/art from some other person, there's nothing really wrong with what he's doing. If people choose to spend their time and money on something that you think it's shitty, it's their problem, not yours.

Both the color schemes and the patterns are perfect, specially for the contents of the game.
The only thing i really see wrong with them, most of the time, is the font of the text in english.

The games are intended to be sold only in Japan, to Japanese people only. A minor spelling mistake like that wouldn't look unprofessional to a Japanese person, especially considering the fact that a word like "ghastly" is not something your average person in Japan would know. On top of that, ZUN's English vocabulary seems a lot richer than the average Japanese person's (hell, probably richer than the average American's vocabulary), though it could be just a matter of typing words into a translator and finding synonyms.

You need to remember that this is his HOBBY. He's doing it in his own free time, which I imagine isn't a lot, outside of his day job. He neither have the time nor obligation to practice and improve his drawing.

Yes, his art is shit, but it's the charming sort of shit. Think of it this way: ZUN's a horrible artist, but a good designer. He can think up interesting and cute designs, but has problems translating it to actual drawings. Which is fine, since we have fan-artists for that.

The important thing is that he can come up with all sorts of awesome design ideas, leagues above what a good majority of character designers can do. It's the same deal with his music as well; he's shit at producing, but is an otherwise (arguably) excellent composer.

I for one think that while ZUN's quality of art is generally poor, it varies through the games and is gradually getting better.

Instead of saying he sucks at drawing I'd say that his style is somewhat unique and charming in it's own way as I've learned to appreciate it during the years.
