Does anyone still play this game?

An incredibly in-depth Touhou RPG.

Prepatched game with the expansion and translation can be found here:
http://www.nyaa.eu/?page=torrentinfo&tid=361555
Make sure to extract in Japanese locale or alternatively if you're having trouble running the game, try removing Japanese letters from the folder names.

Having trouble? You can turn on easy mode at any time for non-boss battles where the damage is halved for you and you gain minor offensive bonuses. (Such as increased chance to land status effects). No one ever does, however, not unless you're in elementary school.

You can also recruit Mokou early on but it is generally frowned upon because she is extremely over powered in the early game.

Make sure to read the manual, and the "gameplay" section on the wiki, it covers basic systems.
Have you had some trouble fighting a boss? Trying to make sense of stage design? Finding out that you need to split your party too late? Discuss it here in this thread!

Wiki at http://en.touhouwiki.net/wiki/The_Genius_of_Sappheiros.. Walkthrough contains spoilers for boss fights, be wary.

I'll post a series of screenshots in a sec. In terms of hours of play, I have about 30 hours in already, and I'm still at stage 9 out of 21 (in the pre-expansion game, there is a lot more to do after that as well).

Yes. Notable differences I suppose are the fact that you can totally respec your character's "growths" at any time to fit your needs, i.e. reimu can be a healer for boss battles and a tankish fighter for random encounters with just a bit of menu fuddling. You can't carry around restorative items like potions, but your hp is totally restored after every battle (not your MP though, so you still get worn down as you go through dungeons. Also random encounters can be hella difficult). Contrary to my above wording, the battles aren't random in the same sense as they are in FF: you can see the enemy sprites on the map, and running into them triggers a battle, rather than just walking around and randomly running into invisible enemies. These enemeies tend not to respawn very easily, so the game has less of a grindy feel than many of the FFs that I've played

Play it. Seriously; this is easily the best RPG I've played in a long time.

It's a pretty basic. Go through dungeons, fight things, look for chests, boss fights, etc. It's not innovative, but it IS very well made. The sprites are charming, the music's great, the balance is superb; if a battle or dungeon is kicking your ass, the answer is almost NEVER to go grind, and the game actually discourages you from doing so.

It's not flawless, mind you, but it is still really fucking good.

What Satori skills you should get depend on where you are in the game.

If you're playing weekend, you craft all you want. Materials drop often enough that they won't be that scarce (but for the love of fuck don't grind for them that's stupid and unnecessary and BORING) and weekend lowers the crafting costs so that there's enough character-specific materials in the main game to craft all their stuff. Except for Nitori and Byakuren for some reason.

Aside from the basic elemental attacks:

Early game, Mind Blast is very useful, Enervation deals low damage, but lowers the enemy's attack drastically. Tentacle deals decent physical damage, and with a good knife, she can drain HP and MP, making it a very efficient move

Mid game, Mad Thunder can be Satori's most efficient skill, she also can be a great healer late game, especially if you have raise dead

Starlight Barrier, Leaf Shield, and other support spells in general are handy for specific encounters, but not a must have

Void Skills, like Bio, Medoroa, etc is good to have since it deals undefendable (no resistance) damage, but most of it can be acquired late game

In the expansion, Punish the Judgment and Dark Giga Flare becomes Satori's endgame skill, dealing great damage. Dark Giga Flare casts very quickly, often first in the turn, while Punish the Judgment can have 0 cooldown.

Or, you can use Satori as Death Inflicter with Death Zapper and Wail, which is very useful in the bonus dungeon

I remember playing this game about a year ago. I only got to that three way split. I was very discouraged after Satori learned that 1% petrify skill then I lost it. I used to play it everyday too. IMO, getting Byakuren and Mokou is not considered cheating (again, IMO). What's the difference with getting some formations by waiting in Akyu's house or the bonus equipments with Kourindou's slot machine? If the game allows it, no problem.

shadow burst (multi target) and demon shock (single target, part of the demon skill tree)

I assume you are talking about demon shock, since it and shadow boom are both single target with similar cost.

Demon shock needs land power, if I'm not mistaken, or Satori won't be able to cast it. So it might be risky using it against enemies that often use light skills (which usually are the ones you want to use dark skills at), since some enemies can make it harder to fight for land dominance.

A couple of things to note:

Satori's Elixir skill:
The english wiki said to use control on Elder Dragon. DO NOT DO THIS.
I spent an hour trying to control the Elder Dragon and it doesn't even have Elixir in its skill set. The one you need to control is the Dragon in stage 27.

Zera Beetles:
This thing is Strawberry Bose's way to troll 100% OCD people like myself, since it is arguably the rarest enemy to find, and it has an equipment drop. This thing has 1% (maybe even less) chance to appear in certain enemy formations in stage 21.
Where to find it easier? In the final room of the bonus dungeon, you can encounter a Lightning Baron. This encounter has a whopping 10% chance each for TWO Zera Beetles to appear.
Of course, getting here by itself is very difficult, and you may not even find a single lightning baron there..

You definitely should give it a shot. I know taste is subjective and whatnot, but I personally find Labyrinth to be fucking amazing, and I enjoyed it more than Sappheiros, though that doesn't make it a bad game by any means.

Labyrinth is a lot more light hearted story wise (though it has its good parts), but the combat is where it's at. It manages to handle issues like random encounters, length of battles, status effects on bosses, etc. far better than most triple A jrpg's out there.
It actually doesn't require grinding nearly as much as people would have you believe. It is a difficult game, sure, but for 99% of the game, it's possible to beat everything with pure strat and good management of your party. The only time I really gave up and had to grind (for 30 minutes, with great efficiency) was floor 18 out of 20.

Overall, it's one of my favorite games. Definitely try it, especially if you enjoy Etrian Odyssey.

Guys i need advice for the bosses at Lakebed Temple.
For team 1: i use mokou and sakuya. A majority of the time things will go well and she'll fall fast, but other times she will use 1000 needles and wile out mokou, i first use sakuyas, clean world, (i think thats what its called. It takes off field effects) and then Colosseo world, then spam fujiwara volcano,

Team 2 is the kicker, i use sanae, aya, yomou, pachy, and satori. the shell bitch is the most difficult one. I mainly use magic attacks but they dont really do much, patchys magic tree is very high (20) and i buff them appropriately, magic/attack up. I still find her very difficult. I use the magic library formation.

Team 3 Alice, nitori, byakuren, reimu, marisa. I have the manipulation tree very high, and the craft tree maxed. When she charges, i absorb the water type move, and i use sunshine lunch formation. I find her difficult, i use dark heal often, and marrionet parriar. Almost every single turn. She kicks my ass a huge portion of the time.

Am i doing anything wrong?

Nitori, Youmu, Sanae, and Byakuren should go to fight the tentacle lady, Byakuren gives Thunder weapon to Youmu, and Nitori use Thunder bullets. Sanae should give RES buffs. Byakuren and Sanae should then continue bffing and/or healing while Youmu and Nitori murders her. The resist Instant Death formation from Komachi may be useful.

Marisa, Patchy, Reimu, Satori should go to fight the shell lady, since she has high Pdef. Reimu sets up barriers when needed, and she can heal, her amulets can be used to attack too. The others should spam fire magic to prevent her from having regen in water.

Put Alice where you need her. I find Reimu's Barrier (And Satori's Starlight Barrier, if you have it) to be enough to help the party survive without Alice, though.

>> No.10362875

Not really. Those three fights are easily the worst in the game since they're almost entirely based on luck.

For team 2 I sent over all of my spell casters (Marisa, Nitori, Patchouli, Satori, Sanae). Set land to fire (or whatever her weakness was), used Sabae's buffs, then went to town. Satori spammed Leaf Shield and heal when possible to prevent people from going down, and attacked when she could.

For team 3 I used everyone else (Alice, Youmu, Reimu, Byakuren, Aya) set to Sunshine Lunch. Alice had Instant Death protection and whenever she used her super attack I'd Little Legion + barrier to negate it and the instant death effect, then go back to spamming Parrar.

>> No.10362990

>>10362634
The last time I played was patch 2.06 or something, so I don't know if they changed anything or not, but I used this team setup.

Against Akame(the one weak against fire) I had Mokou and Byakuren in the Devil Circle formation. Just use Byakuren to buff up Mokou and have Mokou spam Fujiyama Volcano. She should die within 5~ turns.

Versus Kagami(the one where you learn hyper fang crush) my team was Reimu, Satori, Marisa, Patchouli and some filler, probably Aya. I used the Poison shield formation with Reimu in front. With the right equipment, Kagami shouldn't be doing any damage, and you can use Reimu/Satori to heal, Aya to raise evasion, and Marisa/Patchouli to nuke. If I remember correctly, most of her attacks were Slash type.

Against the last boss, I had Alice, Sakuya, Sanae, Youmu and Nitori in the freefight formation. Spam Parrar every turn and Little Legion whenever you feel like she's going to use Maelstrom (it's water based, so get a water shield or something). Since you won't have much healing on this team, you should have Sanae buff everyone's stats and finish her off with your strongest attacks as soon as possible (full moon revenge, crescent moon slash/slash of eternity, rage eight, etc)

I didn't craft many items outside of the Rainbow Greaves and the Carbine, so just go with whatever has the slayer bonus/most damage

I can't say for certain with the elemental shields causing you to take more damage from those elements at all times, as I haven't tested for it specifically. What I can say, though, is that being able to block everything is probably ideal since that gives the greatest benefit to using Marionette Parrar(Peril?). The column/multi-target blocking abilities, anyway.

Of course, gearing her specifically for a fight if you know what you're in for would also suffice.

The final boss is incredibly bullshit.

Most of the bosses in this game are really badly designed and rely way too much on luck to survive. Having to hope that the boss doesn't throw out spellcards or randomly decide to destroy your team in order to win is dumb.

That and it's long as hell too. I keep losing in phase 3 because all of her elemental attacks decimate my team and I can't do anything to defend against it. Even Satori spamming Leaf Shield + Barrier isn't enough.

Yeah, that's not true. You'll have to give an example or three, because as-is I'm calling that total bullshit.

For the final boss, Sanae's M. DEF buff should keep you safe, especially if Byakuren buffs her IND first. Also have everyone in the team for the final stage either a good M. DEF item or something that reduces elemental damage; you probably have a few of those floating around.
Throw up a little legion or optic camo if you're in bad shape and/or she charges up.

Lakebed temple three-phase boss fight. Having to hope that the boss doesn't decide to merk your Mokou.

Anastasis and hoping that your earth enchant sticks.

And no, Sanae's M. DEF buff isn't enough. I was still taking 150 damage+ from each attack, and she'd throw out two or three a turn pretty much killing the weaker of my cast or wiping everyone out if I'm especially unlucky. As said, I even had Nitori as commander using optic camo to stop her, and Satori throwing out barriers.

I've been using: Aya, Mokou, Reimu, Patchouli, Marisa and Alice, Youmu, Byakuren, Sanae and Satori. Been beating down phase 2 before they can finish chanting no problem and can usually burn through phase 1 unless...dun dun dunn, the game decides to just kill me on a whim.

Eh. I've fought her a LOT of times, with either Mokou alone or with one other Touhou, and never had any problems. Like, at all. Dunno what to tell you.
The octopus one, on the other hand...aaagh...

>Anastasis and hoping that your earth enchant sticks.

You want Patchy on the final boss team. Satori is awesome, but you NEED void spirit. I cannot imagine beating the third phase without it.

Every time I fought her, she'd venom Mokou, sleep her or just outright kill her turn one with 1000 needles.

I had to enchant Anastasis with earth so that I could better counter her attacks using Alice. Otherwise her physical attacks destroyed me.

Void Spirit isn't needed since I do that at the end of phase 1 with Patchy (provided she lives), and she doesn't live very long in Phase 3 anyways.

Debuffing...well, I haven't had any luck with debuffing at all outside of the gimmick fights that required it.

The elements listed on the shield represent that they can be blocked. If it's listed as a weakness on the shield, the activation chance for that element is weakened appropriately.
You want relatively high block chance, but keep Alice's passive abilities in mind that increase it. All the PDEF and MDEF will be given to the character on successful blocks, good shields often nullify damage completely if you choose them well.
Keep in mind Marionette Parrar has limited activations, sometimes you even want a shield that can't block a certain element, so you can save the activations for other attacks (some bosses rarely).

In short, listed elements on shields are blockable! There are some amazing craftable physical shields with huge PDEF.

A main reason why Genius of Sappheiros is so esteemed is that unlike many RPGs where you just get a bunch of warriors and mages with varying stats that are more or less interchangable and you just spam your strongest moves, each character in GoS has their own niche, and most bosses also have their own special gimmicks that you need to figure out.

Also, you can change your characters at any time. If you aren't abusing the fact that Weekend made death less a threat, it is important to make use of all your characters to conserve MP to get through stages.

This, to me, is a strike against GoS. Several games, Touhou Labyrinth included, allowed you to make full use of your character's abilities without ever giving that "must conserve MP for later" feel.

I don't know if it gets better later on, but so far there's a whole lot of auto-attacking going on, which is dreadfully boring. Soldiering on in the hopes this game improves though.

Honestly, later on, every trash fight can kill you if you don't take it seriously. You WILL need buffs and magic and possibly appropriate gear.

It is to my endless frustration that nothing came of this scene.

Is there a way to recover your mp?

>> No.10382297

>>10382227
Yeah, there are a couple of ways to recover MP in the game aside from stepping on a Healing Circle. It requires you to be in battle, though.
There are equipment and skills that can grant you MP regeneration in battle after fulfilling certain conditions. Sadly, most of them doesn't really add that much MP, but hey, at least you're recovering some of it back. And there's also Byakuren's 1 bomb commander spell, this one recovers 10% of your maximum MP once applied.

Certain skills require a bomb. This kind of skills have a card like border to the picture.
Commander skills also use a bomb.

crafted zangantou and stuck 25 points into katana, all that death

Who are you guys giving the Kusanagi to? I crafted it for Sakuya, but I'm not seeing much of a difference between that and her 2h. I was thinking of giving it to Aya, as she's kinda uselessly weak at the moment.
Also, I have Mokou at around 350PATK, but she only hits ~300-500 with her regular attack. How can I get more damage out of her? She's equipped with her one handed glove something and some PATK things.

fucking finally. Tenshi should be fun.

Why are you using normal attacks? You should be using her skills, man. Her Fujiyama Volcano hits like a god damn truck.

>> No.10386050

>>10385925
Once I run out of mp, I'm kinda forced to use regular attacks. Fujiyama volcano does hit hard though, especially on those weak to fire. About 6000 damage, pretty damn nice.

>> No.10386126

>>10386050
Is that damage already buffed with Byakuren's Elemental Weapon and Weapon Bless? Enchanting her weapon with the enemy's elemental weakness should boost its damage even further. Oh, and don't forget to use weapons with slayers against your enemies whenever possible.

Just got to Eientei, I've been mildly leveling up my other characters (like 15-20ish compared to my main team's 24-27ish)

Completely turned around my perception of characters I've never used
