Most of the ero is pretty bland and the only heroine I liked was the teacher. The unique thing about this game is that it's the only eroge I know of that makes semi-realistic use of hypnotism (social-engineering included) rather than the usual "I snapped my fingers now suck my dick" kind of nonsense.

Stopped playing Raizen7 (it was too complicated and my waifu keeps cheating on me, couldn't find a way to make it stop), playing Veronica9 instead from the same maker.

It's a pirate slg eroge with an 80's mecha anime feel. Basically you lead a pirate group, you gather companions, buy and equip/upgrade mechas and mobile bases and try to earn money using various means.

I'm amazed by the amount of stuff you can do in this game. It's pretty fun and has unexpectedly deep gameplay. For example you can imprison your companions and force them into prostitution if you want (one of the ways to earn money). But if you do that without a proper reason everyone's loyalty would go down and might even start rebelling. Oh and if that person managed to escape he's going to remember the grudge and will hunt you down.

I'm playing story mode and my only complaint is that the story seems ntr-ish. The main heroine isn't a virgin (I haven't gotten a hscene with her yet but her hymen stat has an X on it.)
I don't know how far I am in the game but just now the imouto left the party to chase after some guy. I swear I'm going to ragequit if she ends up being NTR'd.

歳 wouldn't work here. You'd use 年. From my interpretation, 年 would mean "someone exactly your age" so it'd be like, if the chick was 14 years old, the sentence would then mean "a 14 year old lolicon is scary." 世代 means a generation, so it would mean something like "a lolicon from your generation (in other words, someone around your age) is scary."

Of course, I could be totally wrong about this.

Actually there isn't much of that in this thread itself, it's just that /jp/ in general has that kind of reputation.

Personally I don't think FSN is a masterpiece but it's still a 8.5 something eroge which is very good.
Well mostly HF is masterpiece level and really satisfied me but the other 2 routes felt a bit average/mediocre.
The writing has also its up and down and felt a bit clumsy, veering toward amateurish at some time, the writing in HF was a lot more focused which is another reason I liked it.

I can really understand why people why people think FSN is a masterpiece though, especially if you can't read Japanese and therefore don't have access to the very best of its genre.

For Mahoyo I'm more into a wait and see attitude toward it, production values were orgasmic, music (especially the action ones) was great (and more importantly the music direction was good unlike FSN) and I actually liked Soujurou's as a character a lot.

The writing was a lot more refined than in FSN but honestly I still found it clumsy, overnarrated and lacking a certain sense of irony, the various characters other than Soujurou also couldn't show their real charm, probably because the scale of the game was so small.
It still manages to create a mysterious, kind of fairy tale type of atmosphere but it doesn't do really anything with it.
It's a game that felt both long and short at the same time, it has the potential to become something big in the sequels but I didn't feel really satisfied by the end of it.

White Album 2 PS3 was fantastic if you hadn't played the original. On the subject of rereleases, Dies Irae AA. If you hadn't already played the original, that was top class, GOTY for me. JQV, then that combined with Ave Maria (which is a side story with that serves as both a prequel and a self contained back story for a character whose history wasn't covered in the core game). However, that one is obscure even in Japan still, but no less it's popular here, entirely accessible via download, and popular enough for a Doujin game that it can be on this list. Tsuriotsu, but only Ursule and Luna's route, where Luna's route is imo the best route this year. Harukuru or Gahkthun scores on the top self contained commercial game of the year for me, however I think the later is a bit unfair because high quality steampunk fantasy games are just about monopolized by Liar, but also because the Steampunk Series has this charm in its totally unique, outlandish text.

That being said, I think Mahoyo is overall decent competition and would put it in my top ten, but that really is because the number of competitors were so low.

Huh? Are we talking about the same Key here? The one of which all works prior to Rewrite allowed you to do every route except for the 'final route' in any order you choose?

So far I've only played three routes, Chihaya, Lucia and Kotori, and I felt that was a proper order. If Shizuru route reveals Lucia's big secret (haven't played it yet so I don't know, but it seems reasonably possible) I'd definitely recommend doing Lucia first. Kotori answers some questions you'll have during common route and which you'll increasingly start wondering about, so I'd say that one is best done third (as Shizuru route can't be done before it and Akane is apparently even more plot-relevant).

Not sure about my opinion on route qualities; Chihaya is clearly the weakest route so far, though I'm not sure if I liked Kotori route or Lucia route better. Leaning towards Kotori route right now.

Finished Meguri Hitohira. I enjoyed it a ton, it had a suprisingly strong plot and a few twist in the last chapter to boot.
Really good read, but the last scenes in the last chapter maybe needed to be a bit longer/pause in between so they could sink in properly, for example koma drowning, which is highly emotional (Kurisu's route) would have been better if the mood in the next scene wasn't completely different.
OST was better than I expected too, both the traditional japanese tracks and the more piano heavy ones, but the production values were good all around despite the small resolution (but it's 2003 so I don't complain), espeially the cherry blossoms during spring.
reat read overall and Korisu was best girl without a doubt, proto-Hiyo with a dash of badass and her whole why can't you understand the master isn't weaker than the servant? Zenichi is only there so I don't have to dirty my hands really won me over, but I liked the whole cast.

Pretty bad but the ero scenes are all very short, even if they are plentiful, so everything is easily skippable.

Yugami Kairou was really not bad for a one hour free to download game. There's no real substance, it's all yandere short stories, but the tense atmosphere, really farfetched and creepy developments that came with the archetype, and actually being a horror game makes it easy to recommend for someone with an hour to spare.

Some advice.
First use a guide, there are tons of choices and getting the good end require quite a bit of flag management.

And basically during the game most your choices are about focusing on one of the 2 heroines, Nozomi or Mayumi.
Well most people would go for Nozomi first since she is a the cover heroine/etc... but don't, go for Mayumi first instead.
There are several reasons for that, first the game is largely linear so going for both of them would require going through the whole game twice, which wouldn't be too bad if the already read skip did work (it doesn't).

The second reason is that going for Mayumi unlocks several really interesting scenes during the whole thing that basically add another layer to the game. But these scenes are a bitch to see if you go for Nozomi first since the skip is broken.
So going for Mayumi first ensures you see most of the game, then you just have to skip through the whole thing to see Nozomi's endings

I finished Symphonic Rain. Man, the final ending was really unexpectedly uplifting.

al fine/Torta's awesome route was so well done that it had prepared me to accept Ari's death and be okay with it, so it was all the more of a wonderful surprise at the very end... although I wish we knew what Torta had done after that; she kind of got forgotten about. I'd say Torta's routes were my favorite, followed by Lise, Phorni, then Fal, whose route had one of the best twists but really kind of ruined the character for me.

I miss talking about that game. It was probably one of the more rage-inducing things I'd read until WA2 came along.

I didn't find many occasions to rage. Gape in open-mouthed astonishment, though, sure.

I thought that the huge amount of dissonance was what made her route great. It's really exceptional, in a very short sequence right before the end, how completely the writers shatter all the player's perceptions of Fal up to that point; all the more so after the way, once they'd given you the sense that something wasn't quite right with her at the very beginning but lulled you into complacency only to pull the floor out from under you.

Replaying that route after the reveal, both of Fal's true character and the delusions, would probably be rather interesting. I'd like to do that someday, but right now the wounds are a little too fresh.
