Hatate is not Hata-tan.

Hatate is a creation of ZUN; she is a novice crow tengu reporter who is the publisher of Kakashi Spirit News, an unpopular Gensokyo newspaper. Hatate uses spirit photography to retrieve content for her stories, however the nature of her powers means that what she publishes is old news by the time it reaches her Kappa-made camera phone. Despite this, she has an easy-going personality, except when she is competing with her rival Aya for news stories and readership amongst the denizens of Gensokyo.

Hata-tan is a fan-made creation that originated on pixiv and has subsequently gathered a following amongst a small segment of the Touhou fan community. Hata-tan is a caricature of the worst aspects of Hatate's personality (her one-sided rivalry with Aya, her reluctance to venture outside her home for news) blended with the stereotypical personality of a depressed "alternative" teenage girl: she routinely engages in self-harm, self-degradation, and other obsessive behaviour, and she has an unhealthy attraction towards Aya (who usually responds with abuse). Doujin artists variously depict her as yandere, suicidal, or timidly withdrawn.
