6-8 are the best I think to start off with. (EoSD, PCB and IN) but 10 and 11 are good alternatives. If you want you can take them chronologically, aka starting from 1 and playing them all the way to 13. Or you could just start from whatever strikes your fancy. Just make sure to have fun.

TH13 isn't working properly for me any more. I start it an it appears in the task bar, and I can hear the music and shit too, but it just won't come up for me. I can run it in full screen mode, but I want it windowed, like it always used to be.

Just don't fucking play IN! You will get lazy with your bombs. I had the same problem but luckily I started out with EoSD so I was easily able to do that. If you really, really want to play IN, just don't play with Reimu, because she has the longest death-bomb time.

If I recall correctly, most of the other games give you 6 frames (100 ms) to use a bomb after you are hit to invalidate the death, but IN gives you much, much longer (I think something like 500 ms with Reimu, but I'm not sure).

Which is why you have to practice. It seems to me that, if you seem to die more often because of the youkai, then choose someone with a wide attack range but low power, like Reimu (very wide attack range, because of the heat-seeking, but very low power). If you tend to be killed by bosses more often and the youkai are easy for you, go with someone with limited range but high power/speed, like Marisa. She'll be able to damage bosses much faster than with Reimu, and so will limit the amount of time you have to be exposed to the boss.

I usually don't like playing for score either, although that is one thing that could make a game better. My first experiences of beating the difficulties in order were great, but I've had a world of fun since that has happened. I think it's a matter of preference. Sometimes, I like to play things I'm not familiar with for the challenge. Other times, I like to play things that I am familiar with for the same reason. I find that playing something that I'm familiar with allows me to use a greater part of my skill. I feel like everything I do is much more powerful and meaningful in a game that I'm familiar with. I feel like a tourist otherwise, but that can have its merits too.

You can say that you have "beaten" a game by cheesing through it with the easiest character, but that will only ever be a fraction of the experience that the game has to offer, unless it's a bad game.
>>10323889
Although I find that your terminology is strange, I agree with you.
>>10323929
The stage can be cheesed if you know where the orbs spawn and have a route. Having a fast and high-spread character also helps. As for the boss, I'm pretty sure that her lasers are static.

I can already beat her (just recently I got my first 1cc for SA on Normal, and soon after I managed to 1cc with every other character on my first or second try each. One question though. Are you 100% sure Yuugi's blue lasers are static? I know the red ones probably are, and that's why they're easy as hell for me to dodge probably, but the blue ones seem to be different each time, and 99% of the time either get a bomb out of me or I'll die stubbornly trying to "capture" it

They are completely static relative to Yuugi's position. If you kill some of the yinyangs before they have time to spawn lasers, then those lasers will be missing. On the higher difficulties, if you don't kill anything at all, the bullet limit will cause some lasers to not spawn.

HRAPs are great for STGs, I use a HRAPEX, sticks for STGs have a smaller deadzone to help make small precise movements, it's not something to worry about when starting out though just get used to using it, you'll end up swapping out the stick & buttons later on anyway.

Just a general question. When playing Touhou, which strategy do you find better for improving;

-keep playing no matter what happens and always go as far as you can
or
-restart as soon as you die/bomb due to a stupid mistake

I've been using second option always, but now I realize it might be limiting my chances at improving.

I think the amount of time spent playing the game should determine who's opinion is more valid. People who play more usually have a better understanding of the scoring systems and other intricacies of the game, even if they can't improve because they are untalented. If you clear it on Lunatic, "gg no re w/e," and hopping to another game because you simply "beat it" doesn't show much competence at all.

Players that can only score run are horrible in my eyes. No different from that "EoSD bomb delay" anon.

No one in this thread has to openly state that scoring takes no skill or the opposite. It's already damn clear that people are set in their ways when it comes to judging what is skillful and what isn't. Nothing good will come out of stating one obvious side of an old argument around here, unless you are fishing for responses then trying to outpost them. If that's what you're going for, you're doing a fantastic job, not that achieving that is difficult (see EoSD bomb delay anon).

Otherwise, you sound like a broken record to anyone who has seen any score-related arguments. Why bother when you can take it easy looking down at the scoring community in your mind, alone? Most people here probably have their opinions too, of course. But they are also capable of ignoring disagreeable ones without feeling the need to assert their opinions (redundantly) over multiple posts. I am delighted that you hold me in such high regard, but I can tell you from personal experience that scoring is not as easy as you might think. It depends, of course. Some survival challenges are easier than scoring ones and vice-versa. I'll stop shitting up the threads for now. Though it was fun.
I don't like slow threads personally. I have plenty of friends that like touhou, but not many that actually play/like the games. So I come here for some heated STG discussion but alas, there is none to be found.

Well there's nothing to discuss.

Scoring requires much tighter execution than any cheesy survival run.

Could you point me out a single scorerunner from this board who hasn't done any survival challenge runs?
Yeah, me neither.

World isn't black and white, scoreplayers do also challenge runs, and vice versa.

>their easy mode, copy some guys replay scoring.
As the only currently active (bad) easymode scoring player on the board, I'll point out that most of my routes are made by myself. And I believe most people do. Forming out your own path around the game is part of the fun, whether one was playing for survival or scoring.

If you brought up a specific thing from a specific game instead of some broad topic where the discussion is surely to turn into something like the past couple hours, it might happen. Turns out no one here actually wants to do that, or can't.

I feel the same way at times. Not that I've been here forever, but I think that these threads used to have more discussion about actual gameplay. Even in places outside of /jp/, I'm having trouble finding people to talk to. The only place where it really seems to happen is the live shows, but those are never permanent. Could it be that we have simply exhausted everything there is to talk about?

I apologize for the excessive amounts of meta-posts.

I'll never do "challenge" runs because player-defined rules are arbitrary wastes of time. Trying to compete against the best is the only reason to play these games.
