My best explanation is that since she was reading German books, studying German and watching German TV, she subconsciously stored quite a bit of vocabulary, but using the language never "clicked" for her until her coma. I recall cases like this where people's accents would change (example: from American English to British English) after head trauma, but I haven't heard of anyone switching their language entirely.

That is a philosophical rather than a scientific question at this point. Just as it is difficult to imagine how something could come from nothing, it is also far too early to be demanding that science explain something like this at this point. We're not there yet. - cosmological questions (Did anything exist before the big bang? Why do the constants of the universe occur in such proportions such as to sustain life?)
- questions we are physically barred from answering (How many galaxies exist in the unobservable universe?)
- computationally unfeasible to answer (various open mathematical questions)
- technologically incapable of answering (humans may never build equipment powerful enough to observe certain physical phenomena)
- philosophically incapable of answering (is a philosophical zombie even a logical possibility?)

We talked in my linguistics class about a mormon missionary to Canada who was in a car accident and as a result lost the ability to speak English but can now speak fluent French.

What happens is they damaged their primary language center of the brain and the brain, being as awesome as it is, transferred the primary language center to the previous secondary language center.

In order to be published (ie. be relevant) arguments for a scientifc theory need to be backed up by logically sound arguments which your peers try to deathrape. If you have used faulty reasoning or been even slightly vague, then it's back to the drawing board. And even if you're able to prove something mathematically, it's still not considered good enough until a hundred billion people have individually verified the results experimentally.[1]
