Hi jp,
Its a silly question but how do I become a better otaku? Sometimes when im browsing jp I think that all of you guys know a lot more about all the japanese stuff than I do. Im not very long into otaku things yet. Maybe 1 1/2 years, but I do my best to improve. Im only watching animes, I even feel embarassed that Ive watched things like the big bang theorie and how I met your mother a few years ago.
My favourite music has become Jpop and Kpop.
But how can i improve? I didnt play any touhou games yet, I dont even really know whats all the touhou stuff is about. Ofc I started to learn japanese a few month ago.

So maybe a question to everyone: how long did it take till you where as "otaku" as you are right now?

Don't worry about Touhou, that's casual stuff. Just continue exploring your current hobbies.

no offence but you're going a little over board with the 'wearing your kimono's around town', you're not in japan right now so there would be no need to get used to wearing them since you would be going to a country that always wears them, so you wouldn't stick out... plus you can't just go to japan and go to a high school, you have to get a learning visa as well as passing the national japanese language test, and you'll also have an entrance exam to take which will most probably have words that you haven't ever seen nor understand, also the teaching in japan is so different that if you go there with a standard education that you'll fall straight to the bottom of the class...
also, you don't call yourself -sama, the japanese don't refer to themselves with -chan -san -kun or -sama, its just plain rude and childish to them, also gomenasai mean 'i am sorry'... so you'll be saying 'i am sorry, my name is ken'
and lastly... people don't repond to you when you speak japanese because they don't understand you..
oh and otaku means geek and you can't go to high school if you're 27...

>> No.10277143

Same thing you do with every medium: consume classics.
Too boring? Not moe enough? Then you're not a true otaku.

I'm a gaijin and also an otaku and it would seem that you don't know quite as much about current Japanese culture as you think. As already mentioned in other answers, you don't use honorifics with yourself, especially -sama, as that would make you out to be very arrogant. To be honest, your question (which isn't a question) also projects arrogance, which probably wouldn't go over well, once you got to Japan. It probably doesn't go over well here in America, either.

That's nice that you already know the history, writing, and spoken language. Do you know about their culture, though? They aren't in the feudal era anymore, like in Rurouni Kenshin, but honor is still important. Very few people (mainly the elderly and those wishing to preserve tradition) still wear kimonos. Are you sure what you're wearing is a kimono and not a yukata? Kimonos are for formal occasions and yukatas are more casual, like for a matsuri. An American walking around in Japan in a kimono or yukata would probably raise a lot of eyebrows. For the most part, the Japanese culture is assimilating with the American pop culture. They think anything from America is cool while otaku think anything from Japan is cool.

Also, good luck with the process of moving to another country when the time comes.

Jpop is shit, it's only worth it for the idols. Acid Mothers Temple is the best Japanese band today.

You will always be a casual if you don't know Japanese. People here may say otherwise because they are too stupid or lazy to learn, but it's true. If I told you that I was a student of French literature but that I didn't know French, would you take me seriously? Of course not. It's the same here. If you don't know the language you don't have a serious interest in the hobby.

I'm not like those old farts.

Basically I think of it like when people say, "I am a Trekkie."
Great, what's your favorite series?
"I dunno, I've only watched the 2009 movie."

It's fine to be a fan of the reboot, but you are not a Trekkie. Stop trying to turn "Trekkie" into a status symbol, pseudork.

I'm not motivated to read VN's because I have no one to talk to them about.

All you pricks do is talk in your little circle-jerk about untranslated VN's, to talk about vn's with /jp/, I pretty much have to know japanese.

Learn Japanese then. I've been practicing Japanese for little more than a month and I can already play some untranslated games, nothing too text-heavy of course, but I'm sure I'll have no problem in a year or two.

You're that anon that was asking plenty of questions about learning japanese, right? Look, anon, just read the main VNs, play some doujin games, watch anime, and then start lurking some japanese sites. For example, to learn more about doujin circles and games, I've decided to search for lists of comiket games, play the games, search for the doujin circle name if I like it, and then download other stuff from it in case I do like it. It's all about forming your own plans and finding you way around. Just remember that if you're not enjoying yourself, just, you know, stop doing it. All in all, this is just entertainment. You don't need to be an otaku for the sake of being one, you just become one naturally after becoming obsessed with it. Don't do it for the brand, do it for the fun.
