Until very recently it increased your life expectancy to stay the hell away from modern medicine. It was less than 200 years ago that a Hungarian doctor convinced the medical community that washing your hands before sticking them inside a patient was a good way to stop the spread of disease: someone following traditional purity rituals was a lot less likely to kill you than a 19th century doctor.

So I would expect this belief to hang around for a while longer.

Science works in a way that uses the strictest most absolutely thoroughly tested means to prove something as true or false, right or wrong, working or not working.

It means no matter how many people can see a UFO or even a new type of butterfly or something, if science can't get its hands on it - it will remain 'unproven'. This is a good thing when it comes to everyone being on the same page.

However, if through history you'd seen plenty of people be healed through an unscientifically proven method, wouldn't you take the chance? Of course it's not 'proven' and 'potentially unsafe' but you don't need science to hold your hand constantly.
