I'm pretty new to playing VN, but recently I've gotten really into eroge with Chiitrans for tricky kanji. I just finished Ijikuri Mama, and I'm playing through Wanko to Kuraso and Chichi Miko!! at the moment.

About a month ago I stalled on Serawi's route in Kamidori Alchemy Meister, but I don't see myself going back to that this month.

So far Gakhtun (of course) and Suigetsu 2 have been good, not a bad month.

imo Irene to a lesser extent and Licia's chapters were overall the best since they focused on the contrast between the prison and the upper strata, making good use of the setting.

I'm playing through Justy x Nasty right now but I'm just not feeling it at all. The episodic stories are fine and all but they're too short. MC really isn't anything special. On another note, I really do like Hibiki and Kirie. Hibiki is especially loyal and I think that's really cute. I also like the fact that they don't beat the living shit out of the MC whenever he's in the onsen accidentally or for some other reason. Overall, I want to continue the game but it really feels way too short to actually capture me. Not even Kiritani Hana can make me stay at this point.

After having it rot on my desktop for so long, i've finally started Steins;Gate (should've played C;H first).

but after 20 hours playing the fucking game decides to start freezing when I check my mails. hoping It is a temporary thing, since my quick load from the beginning of the chapter proves that the freezing only happens at that most recent part.

anyway, I dig science-fiction VNs more than romance ones. planning to do a marathon with the 3 translated Infinity games.

It's all a matter of fetishes. I like to think that a yandere's love is one of the strongest in the world simply because it drives them crazy. Finished Sekka and Kanna's routes in Kimisora, in the end it was nothing special. Yeah Sekka was a yandere but in general the whole thing was a normal romance/drama. I felt like it's problem was that I didn't get attached to the characters at all. The sad/dramatic moments had absolutely no impact on me, and I can cry like a bitch at nukige. I did like the end with Sekka where you chose to remain in that world with her. I probably won't be reading any more routes. It was a little disappointing but I don't regret reading it.

Some notes in advance: Never7 isn't that good, not at all representative for the infinity series. Ever17 starts slower than Remember11, but the final route makes it worth it even if you hate the earlier parts of Ever17. Remember11 gets great real quickly, but many people were disappointed by its lack of closure.

It's probably my favorite VN. The story is engaging, the gameplay mixes well and doesn't feel tacked on. When Dive 2 came out I pretty much spent all my free time reading it straight through. I'm also a big fan of sci-fi and cyberpunk so that added to it as well.

The Mega-CD is definitely the best version. The most complete one without being censored and it's the only translated one. The emulator I use is Kega Fusion. Make sure you download all the appropriate audio files in addition to the ISO file or the game will freeze when it tries to load certain songs.

The gameplay's pretty fun. I'd recommend using all the different weapons since only way to unlock new ones is to level them all. I got stuck using the gatling gun (since it's just so damn OP) / other early game stuff and for that reason didn't have access to many of the "late game" gear in Sky 2.
As >>10253139 said the game part does weave well into the story and many of the boss battles managed to get me really emotionally pumped.
I personally preferred Sky 1 over 2 since it really starts to repeat itself after a while and Sora's route wasn't as great as I was expecting.

999 is basically more violent version of E17. Reading one makes the other somewhat redundant.
A while ago I would have recommended E17 over 999 but the former has quite a bit of stupid, completely unnecessary scenes compared to 999 which on the other hand forces you to use a walkthrough because the game only has one usable save slot. The main twist is also better explained / fleshed out in E17.

Though if you're ever planning to dive into Infinity series as a whole or Nakazawa's other scifi titles for that matter (I think I/O is getting a translation) reading E17 is a must.

Ever17 - Must-play masterpiece. Generally considered one of the best VNs ever. Opinions range from 'best story ever' to 'the initial routes are boring but the end makes up for it'.

999 - Written by one of the writers (not the main writer) of Ever17. It can pretty much be described as Ever17 meets Killer Queen; so derivative it will ruin Ever17 for you if you play this first, but other than that it's pretty good.

Ghost Trick - Not a VN but rather a story-heavy adventure game by Shu Takumi (writer of Ace Attorney 1-4). Starts off kind of boring but after some point it keeps getting more and more awesome each chapter until the end. You know how final cases in Ace Attorney are grander and more spectacular than normal cases? Imagine if there was a huge final case spanning an entire game, and that's pretty much what Ghost Trick is like after the intro parts.

My opinion is that Ever17 >> Ghost Trick >> 999. If I had to recommend only one, it would definitely be Ever17.

Because it's pure suffering to make a translation which is accurate and enjoyable at the same time. It might be hard to understand, since you don't know Japanese, but the language is entirely different up to its very core. So what you call translating is more like localizing, and you need some literary talent for that. I, for my part, don't think I'm gifted enough to do something like that.

I see translated VNs more like an entry to VNs itself. I dunno how anyone can bear to wait 3 - 4 years to read a VN he's interested in. It sounds horrible.

The gameplay is actually pretty fun, though it has gotten significantly easier by the 10th~ battle. I double upgraded エルザ and when I use her and play third person I just mow down enemies.

I can only assume the third person view is bugged or something because you can shoot enemies from so far away that they don't even attack back.

Obligatory Kajitsu post; finished Michiru's route. Definitely not as good as Sachi's, and in terms of just the routes and their endings, so far I'd rank them Sachi's > Michiru's = Makina's > Yumiko's. Factoring in the fact that I absolutely adored Michiru from the start though, I felt her route manages to be better overall than Makina's, but still not able to reach the heights of Sachi's.

I just finished the Eris route in this one. Compared to the common parts and the other route I've read so far this was story-wise pretty good and heartstring-tucking, I liked it.
A bit surprising because up to now I thought the basic story in this was a bit lame and I was mostly reading it for the characters and the humor (and cute art).

Finished Akatsuki no Goei. So much potential, completely wasted. I loved the characters (especially Kaito, Son, Moe and Tsuki), the setting and especially the comedy.
One of the rare games where I like pretty much all the cast (except maybe Anzu).
Yet, the 'routes' if you can call them that were terrible. The only one that felt complete in any form was Moe's route.

I can forgive this stuff if they were going to carry on these routes in further installments,
but I hear that the FD doesn't do much better and Shuumatsuron has completely new heroines.

Going to start the FD soon, but just want to confirm something, please correct me if I'm wrong here.
From what I gathered, there is no true/canon route at all in any of the games, but Shuumatsuron takes place after the first game with it carrying on from the Kaoru tease we got in the first game.

It's much more light-hearted than the previous four games, since, at its core, it's a romance between a girl and a superhero in an Academia where some people can use arts. It still has some terrible things beneath, but it's such a bright city on the surface.
The best aspect pf the game was without a doubt the slow-burning romantic development between Neon and Tesla, their interactions are great and the fact that it takes so fucking longa nd get obstacles makes it a lot more realistic even if the setting itself isn't quite there.
Also Sakurai really improved in character interactions, the characters REMAIN throughout the game, which is a big thing for me and you can see them post development and Neon and Tesla's interactions with the same characters are so starkly different it's really fun.
The writing style itself is a lot more 'accessible' I suppose, follows what Sona nyl tries, without so many echoes, and removes the vocatives/epithets or however you want to call them. Also has a lot more Lovecraft references than usual.
Art is surprisingly good without being as abstract/stylish as in previous games and the OST is up to par with some really good tracks.

It's hard to place it in the beautiful series since it's a bit of a breakthrough and stops being so focused in melancholy for the most part, but if I had it would be my second/third favourite, but mainly because the story really appealed to me and the conclusion had me grinning like a retard.

Yeah, it's like Sharnoth in that the overarching plot is pretty much completely absent in the central parts, having to rely on the characters to carry everything. But in this case the setting doesn't feel as poignant as Manhattan, Inganock or even steampunk London, there's basically little tension for most of the game and it's all pretty lighthearted monster-of-the-chapter stories. I felt it didn't really make the theme of the game come out as much as in the other games, where the bleak setting made a nice contrast to the positive feelings that were the focus of the games (then again I'm a fag who loved the Elysia segments so take that how you will).
When shit comes together in the final chapter it was seriously great though, one of the better climax in the series.

They obviously tried to make the game more approachable to the regular kind of reader, both in writing and in content (beach chapter comes to mind) so I guess it might prove to be quite popular especially with those who found it hard to get into the previous games, but I suppose it's not really the best steampunk.

There's a problem for you-the fact that you know Kana is supposed to be sad. These things have the most emotional impact if you do not expect it at all and are not prepared for it, enjoying it and believing it'll continue to be happy slice of life forever until your heart is cut out.

I couldn't enjoy Kana nearly as much just because I came in already prepared to be sad and therefor not letting myself get as attached to the characters.
