Fact is, they're some of the most accessible bullet hell shooters out there, not to mention that their music is wonderful and their bullet patterns often exceptionally beautiful.

Touhou is a series of bullet hell shooters with excellent music and bullet patterns, and mediocre art at best. All the characters are female, initially because ZUN, the only developer of the games (responsible for the art, music, and program), cannot draw men, and now mostly because it's expected. For something like this, it is notably low on fanservice and sexualization, at least in the main-series games.

The series has the most productive fanbase of pretty much anything ever, to the point where it has created multiple (mostly single episode) near-professional-quality anime.

Unfortunately, as a result, many of its so-called fans have not actually played the games.
