Now that I watched it again they're just using stun as the equivalent of a knockdown, which makes sense. As long as they don't introduce any silly tech mechanics this may be closer to a traditional fighter than some people think.

It is kind of unclear though, in the last part of the round Reimu whiffs a projectile through Marisa while she is in stun but then activates a special and the hits count with the existing combo string. There are several possible explanations but I guess the demo will be out soon enough so we can just see for ourselves.

This. SWR's main problem was the lack of "turn off weather" option.

Wanting a normal ground based fighter in a setting where everybody is flying pretty much all the time is just stupid.

Do people still play that? I haven't seen anyone mention it in months... also, 13.5 won't play anything like it, and it won't be too similar to Psychic Force either (although it is mentioned constantly for whatever reason).

It's been mentioned once before, but Astra Super Stars is the closest equivalent to what 13.5 will be. There's footage of a fairly recent ASS tournament on YouTube, here:

You may notice that a lot of mechanics in ASS were pasted over to 13.5 verbatim. This is by design.
