How bad of an idea is it to do a relatively easy degree while taking Japanese and then getting either a translator or English teaching job in Japan?

I have nothing interesting or stimulating in my life and doing a difficult degree would spell doom for my fragile mental health. On the other hand I enjoy my current Japanese classes and I've talked to people who've taught in Japan for a year or two and they seemed convincing that it was really interesting.

I was going to be mean, but your image is pretty cute so you get a pass.

4chan in general isn't the best place for life advice, but /jp/ is even worse.
You could maybe try /trv/. They're bound to have some people who've done the whole teaching abroad thing.

Major in English and Minor in Japanese, if you can do a double major then do.

"Major in English"

It gives me a turgid egorection to know that other people need to do this to understand English at a high level.

Go kill something.

There's nothing interesting or stimulating in Japan, especially if you're going to work there. It's a dull and depressing existence.

Grab a gun and walk into the forests. Hunting and killing your first animal is a far more stimulating experience than living in a stagnant salary-man society.

You know, by the number of people who post here with the intention of becoming English teachers in Japan, it should be literally overflowing with gaijin right now.

Except in Japan you don't have the option of disconnecting from society and running into the forest with a rifle.

Gun laws are too restrictive and there's not enough untamed wilderness in Japan to be able to get away with homesteading/poaching and not get caught.

Wow not a single mildly academic or even straightforward answer to OP's question. Stay pleb /jp/.

Just taking Japanese while getting some other degree probably wont get you an translator/teaching job in Japan or at least not a particular good paying one. Lots of people want to do that stuff and programs like TESOL mean that any person who graduated highschool or even with a good TOEFL grade can go teach english abroad. In general, foreign translation jobs are given to native speakers who learned english.

It's not an impossible path but majoring in something stupid wont really put you at the top of the list. It might put you above the fresh out of highschool kids though.

If this is a career you're serious about though consider a degree in Linguistics with a minor in Japanese. Linguistics isn't terrible hard and is considered "more rigorous" than other arts majors. You could also reverse the two and major is Japanese and minor in linguistics and have a similar sort of deal.

I know a female who went there and said it was the most fun she'd ever had. People were nice to her, she had lots of friends, not hint of xenophobia towards her because she was gaijin. But then she looked like this.

They probably thought she was an anime character from a parallel Universe or something.

Japan is a great country to visit as a tourist, but it's a terrible country to live in. This is true for most east asian nations. You will most likely either move back home or kill yourself within 10 years.

all japs learn english at school and they suck at it. it took them 8 years to just make english interfaces on the most popular websites. japs are total failures about globalization, it's only because they were a proxy against china they're even where they are now.

a gaijin who has a major in japanese is more valuable than a jap who has a major in english.

It only works on females. You might be able to get a girlfriend, but they'll probably just hate you even more. Imagine if a handsome spanish man came to your school or place and started getting lots of attention from all the girls. Add to that the fact that most Japanese men are lonely betafags with a lifetime of resentment, you probably won't get as warm of a welcome as she did.

That's because she was just vacationing there. Almost everyone comes away from Japan with stories about how polite everyone was, but it's a whole different story when you live and work in Japan.

You'll be ostracized and isolated, it will be near impossible for any Japanese person to ever see you as a peer or accept you into their clique-like social groups. Of course you will still be treated politely, but once the vacationing gaijin feeling wears off then you realize that you really are completely alone and none of these people will ever think of you as anything more than a novelty.

She stayed there for 3 years actually. She's only just come back, but she's going back again soon. I agree though, if you're a male, life won't be as dandy as you think it will be. I think people think the Japanese idolise Westerners because most Westerners think Anime girls are based off white people, but that's not true. Like you said, most Westerners would be treated as a novelty. I think she just caught a lucky brake.
