Non-literal translations are more the interpretation of the translator than they are the meaning of the original. For example, when meaning is unclear, the poor translator will decide what the meaning is for you, but the good translator will leave his translation unclear like the original.

I would like to give an example of this from the Bible. Consider Acts 19:4-5. Here is the KJV translation (literal)

4 Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.
5 When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.

Here is the NIV translation (less literal)

4 Paul said, “John’s baptism was a baptism of repentance. He told the people to believe in the one coming after him, that is, in Jesus.”
5 On hearing this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.

Pay close attention to the difference in Verse 5. In Verse 4 Paul is speaking, but the KJV does not use quotation marks, and thus we are not told where his speech ends, so it possible that the sentence in Verse 5 is still part of Paul's speech. This is in line with the Greek original, which also uses context to and verbal cues to show when speech begins or ends. The NIV has decided that the speech ends before Verse 5, and thus has decided on something for the reader that was unclear in the original. The KJV leaves it unclear whether John's baptism was the same baptism as that of Jesus, where the NIV decides that it wasn't.

Sorry to use a biblical example but I think it works.

And line 5 does read like a separate sentence and not part of what Paul is saying to me.

If there is not a reason *in the text* for you to translate it as separate from his speech, you don't have a basis for translating it as such. The only clear cue that the speech is over is in verse 6.

6 And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied.
