Recurring NEET problems at Christmas...

How do you avoid going home and seeing your family?

How do you get out of the awkward Christmas dinner, or sit through it if you have to attend?

What are some cheap, generic, but acceptable presents to give?

Fuck I hate Christmas, this is the perfect time to turn the heating up and get cozy at home, instead I am forced to go home and take part in this cultural bullshit.

Same thing, pretend to be sick or have an upset stomach. If you complain that you're having a stomachache or diarrhea, chances are they won't make you eat a huge holiday meal.

Well I feel obliged to show up for christmas since they did give birth to me, fed me, clothed me etc. It's the least I can do.
Coffe mugs, tea towels, book, hypodermic needle, whiskey/mulled wine etc are cheap and sort of good gifts.

I'm not completely fucked, more a recluse by choice rather than having been ran out the town with pitchforks and flaming toches, during dinner just throw in your thoughts here and there and agree to whichever pointless thing in a way that will please the majority. It isn't being conceited. There's a thing called progress liberal atheist who don't support social constructs like family and instead look at the community as a whole as a family using communist and socialist ideals. I live at home so I see my family all the time, I just try and keep myself confined to my room as much as possible. For Christmas dinner I usually just stay silent the entire time on the pretense that I'd prefer to enjoy my food while eating, rather than talking. I don't have any money at all so I don't think anyone minds me not purchasing gifts. However, If I did have money, I suppose the default affordable gift would be a cute tree ornament, a nice scarf or just chocolates.

My parents always hired private tutors and made me attend extra classes (sports, languages, music, those church lessons) so I never had any free time, not even during the weekends. Worst part is that it was all a waste because I never paid any attention and I graduated with an avg. score. Afterwards I decided I was going to rest for a while and ended up becoming a NEET.

I stopped going to Christmas and Thanksgiving with the extended family even before that, so it was a gradual thing for me.

But honestly you'd be surprised how much better it is when you take gifts out of the equation. When you're alone on Christmas and your Birthday it doesn't feel nearly as lonely. You still get a little depressed, but once I took gifts out of the equation I felt so much better.

Some countries have fucked up debt laws. For example in Spain if you don't pay off the mortgage the bank keeps the property but the debt isn't absolved. And it's not like you can just ignore it and move on because the government's tributary agency will seize your wages and bank transactions to pay it off. The only way to avoid this is to make your employer pay you in cash, and I don't think that's legal because you have to pay taxes, keep records and stuff when you hire people and run a business. The only solution would be to work under the table doing odd jobs while living with relatives. Also, there's no limit to how much the debt can grow via yearly interests. So if you fuck up, you can never hold down a stable job again or have a bank account at all, for the rest of your life.

And NEET life... for some people it's fine. For some people it's necessary for a couple years until they find bearing in life. For some it'll result in depression or worse.

I did this. I prefer being a NEET, to be honest. I enjoyed the course but I hated the people. They kept trying to be my friend and I didn't know how to deal with it.
"Hey do you want to go to that new nightclub this Friday?"
Fuck off. I don't know you. I have done nothing nice to you so please don't be nice to me.

The one thing I miss is the university library. I spent most of my time sitting there reading textbooks that had nothing to do with my course. I could probably go back there, but I'm scared I'll run into people or I'll get found out as not a student (are university libraries supposed to be public or student-only?)

Basically, if you feel bad then drop out. You're going to be in debt anyway, and there's no sense remaining miserable.
If you enjoy the course and facilities and are capable of everyday uni life, then repeat the year. Write a letter saying you're depressed or something. They'll understand.
