The problem with Whiteness is people try to use it to replace nationalism. Whites aren't all the same. Sure, they share a lot in common, and you can have a multi-national White state that's still relatively homogenous. And you can have a state that only accepts X nationality and the Whites most similar, like the early United States.
Whiteness is only used because making the European settled colonies wholly European again is a goal close enough for most people (I'm conveniently ignoring Blacks in the US for now). It's not ideal. I don't think anyone would support flooding the UK with foreign Whites, for example.
