Thank you very much!
A Happy Chanukkah to you as well!

Tonight is the second night!

I couldn't find anything Touhou and Chanukkah/Jewish related anywhere like in the Christmas thread, so have a Sanae. Some of her spellcards reference the old testament and Passover.

Did you remember to say the שהחינו in addition to the regular prayers?

Only chanukah image I know of.

I am currently far away from my home and family, alone in a small apartment. I don't really have anything to light or anyone to say prayers with. So I wasn't really planning on doing much, perhaps just saying the basic prayer.

But now I realize that I have you to sing and celebrate with, /jp/.
No, I did not yet say the שהחינו, but I will now. I feel that now it will be especially relevant.
Thank you /jp/.

They aren't as "festive" as Chanukkah.
Chanukkah doesn't have much religious importance or connotations connected to it, so it can be more mainstream and fun for all!

>> No.10195221

Why are there presents on Chanukkah? When was that first done because the actual event has nothing to do with gifts.

>> No.10195234

>>10195221
I don't think you have to give presents, it just became a tradition at some point in time.

>In North America especially, Hanukkah gained increased importance with many Jewish families in the latter half of the 20th century, including large numbers of secular Jews, who wanted a Jewish alternative to the Christmas celebrations that often overlap with Hanukkah. Though it was traditional among Ashkenazi Jews to give "gelt" or money coins to children during Hanukkah, in many families this has changed into gifts in order to prevent Jewish children from feeling left out of the Christmas gift giving.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hanukkah

One could argue that the original true Christmas wasn't about gift-giving either and comes from a pagan holiday.
Basically as Christmas became more commercialized, especially in the states, Jewish children started to feel left out during the holidays. So more secular Jews started to bring the gift-giving aspect to Chanukkah so their kids could get presents during the holidays too. Since the holiday dates usually overlap, it worked out well.
Originally Chanukkah wasn't too big or important and not much was given out, but there was a movement to bring the holiday up as a Jewish alternative to Christmas so everyone can participate in holiday cheer!

Christmas became a gift holiday because we wanted to move Three Kings Day to a better day.

Places that still celebrate Three Kings Day (mostly South America) don't have Christmas presents.

Christmas has nothing to do with presents, Three Kings Day does. They celebrate both.

Oh! Now I get it. I misunderstood you. Good to know.
Neat that they made an attempt to prevent and move the commercialization of the holiday so that the religious connotations and importance could remain intact.

Here Christmas is very commercialized. They even start to sell Christmas goodies after Halloween ends. And places like Japan or Hong Kong seem to only have the commercial aspect.
Chanukkah is rather commercialized too, of course on a lesser scale. But it's not too religious or significant of a holiday. So most don't consider it a big deal.
