I wrote about this recently. I prefer Project Shrine Maiden because it's
* what ZUN often calls the series
* on a lot of official media like game covers
* not a retarded romanization (whine all you like, but we say Tokyo, not Toukyou)
* English, and I always prefer the English over the Japanese (especially if it's official)

I suppose the fanbase just prefers Touhou because it's Japanese. There's nothing wrong with that, it's a distinctly Japanese series and it's fine to be attracted to Japanese content like a wapanese teenager. However, I do wish Project Shrine Maiden had became the accepted Western title. If something has an acceptable, English alternative then there's no sense in not using it, doubly so if it's what the creator uses.

I've been a fan of Toho Co,'s films for almost twenty years, but I never thought the name was dumb. Distinctly Japanese, yes, but it's hardly offensive. Even in English there are terrible titles people just accept: "Resident Evil", "Quantum of Solace", "The Catcher in the Rye". These things make no sense if you think about them, but you don't so it's okay. Two syllables are just two syllables. They sound like no English word so you're golden.

Yeah, obviously I'm biased and oriented to English. Resident Evil is Japanese, I don't care about James Bond, and the title of The Catcher in the Rye is actually a reference to in-book content, so I can't complain about that. I think Toehoe sounds dumb in English, but I'm sure it's fine in Japanese. It's shorter too (even though it SHOULD be To-o-ho-o), so if I had to choose I'd choose "Touhou." Still sounds dumb though.

A name making sense doesn't make it a good name. "Quantum of Solace" is a good example. A small amount of comfort in a time of sadness. It makes sense, it fits the theme of the movie, but it also sounds like something a 16-year-old with a thesaurus would title his high school essay.

You can over-analyze anything, but if you take a little step back and think about "Resident Evil", it's not a particularly good name. It's just one that has caught on.
