This statement is false. Kourindou has visitors. It's just that more often than not the visitors aren't customers. People like Reimu and Marisa just go there for shits and giggles.

His shop is not unsuccessful. It's a more of a trading post than an actual shop. And even then majority of his stock is his own private collection that he is unwilling to part with. Unless Reimu or Marisa show up and take it.

His power level kind of sucks, he's one of the few notable men, probably the only notable man that is still around. There are others and there are humans who challenge China to martial arts fights now and again to test their strength (much to the amusement of Remilia who has been known to watch these challenges).

Rinnosuke's role from the stories seems to basically come down to fleshing out each of the girls personalities even further as they come to visit him. He remains a collector shop keeper while others come around and solve his minor problems or otherwise just annoy him.

From his stuff we learn exactly how much of a bitch Reimu can be to youkai, how Yukari basically takes what she likes from his shop now and again as payment for keeping his heater stocked with fuel and a reasonable amount of Marisa's background.
