How would one go about getting a /jp/er friend?

>> No.10114679

Hang out in IRC? The popular /jp/ channels have upwards of 50 users.

Or you could email people. Someone recently emailed me out of the blue, which was nice.

>> No.10114749

Based on what I've seen from /jp/ers outside of /jp/, if there was a /jp/ party tomorrow and everyone was teleported there, at least half the people would get on really well. That's not to say some people wouldn't be shy and there'd be a few people (like me) who try to hide in the corner, but a lot of people would be all, "Hey, you like Marisa? She's my favorite Touhou too!" with their intoned voices and facial expressions and stuff.

I'm not saying it's a myth that people here are asocial or anxious, but I think a lot of people ham it up. I've seen /jp/ regulars chat to each other confidently in IRC channels and even speak at each other through Skype or those chat sites. It actually makes me feel sick, like it was one big joke all along and I was the only person who didn't realize.

Orbiters, crossboarders, and people falling out with their interests are the ones most likely to go out and actively seek people to talk with, so therefore they will make up the bulk of those you encounter. The fact the /jp/ is a complete wreck has only exacerbated this, since most of the people with an honest interest in the things you would consider to be otaku culture have long since parted ways with this place.

Normal social people like normal social things, who'd have thunk it?

If you're lucky and find someone actually worthwhile, treasure that meeting. It may come to an end eventually, sure, but that's just life. STALKER is fine, but only the first one, and completely unmodded.

The third one is way too easy modo, and the second is too buggy to play, as in when it's not crashes quests fail to finish preventing you from moving on or leaving an area. And it crashes a lot.

I don't want to talk to you about it though, STALKER is something I do by myself, privately.

The few times I tried getting in contact with people on here have been depressing. First there's the fact that that talking to someone makes me anxious, so a ton of people I could never reply to because they sounded intimidating. Then there people who sounded like they belonged on /v/. Then there were people who were just regular normals and emailed me about their normal everyday life, their parties, best friends; even sending me a ton of pictures of themselves spending time with their friends like I care about their shitty circle of friends and how they're such wonderful social butterflies. Most people are usually WAY younger than me and I can't relate to them at all. Often times no one even believes me if I say I'm a shut-in, because their definition of shut-in is still being a perfectly normal and functional member of society but not going out every single day like they do (oh no! I'm such a shut-in too! I haven't seen my friends in a couple days!). One guy even said "Yeah right!" and laughed about it like it was a huge joke when I told him my living situation.

To be honest, I don't even know why more than half these people browse /jp/. There was one tripfag I spoke to who was the only one who seemed like he actually belonged on /jp/, but he stopped talking to me because he was always too busy playing jrpgs to care.

It's better if you just avoid direct contact with people, seriously.

Usually, random people going into a thread designed to "meet friends" don't get what they want. It's unnatural and awkward.

The best way is to just have natural conversations here. Then, if you have one that goes smoothly and still want to talk, ask the other person/people if they want to continue off the site. If they agree, the ice is already broken and you already have a base to build the friendship off of.

Though most /jp/ folks will probably close the topic in fear once you ask. You'll need to be persistent and keep trying.

A few here might hate hearing this, but...

If you want a good, easy, pain-free way to make good friends on /jp/, then use a tripcode. Or the very least give people some sort of identity to work with, like your personal website or real contact info or something (no bs "4chan only email accounts").

I've made so many good friends here by just, well, throwing myself out there I guess. It's ironic, because anonymity doesn't encourage this whole process, and I know I had a tough time doing it during my Anon days pre-2008. But when I started putting myself out there I've lost count of the opportunities for friendship that came up, as well as the times cool/nice people randomly messaged me. So in the end I've made some very good IRL and online friends through /jp/, and I recommend taking this route if you're interested in friendship.

Troll mode activated? That's a huge assumption about people that you're making there. I don't think you should do that.

But no, both are important. One is not more important than the other. Because in the end, what are words without the character (or accountability) to back it up? I mean, it's cool and all when you're just shooting the shit on a thread on /jp/. But what happens when you want to take a step further, and make friends with the one you're talking to?

That is when the who you are part begins to take relevance for both parties involved.

>I mean, it's cool and all when you're just shooting the shit on a thread on /jp/
So you think Anonymity is only there to shit up things? This is exactly why you haven't understood anything about 4chan.

It's just that you have nothing worthy to say, to show or to do and have to rely on a persona instead.

>> No.10121879,16 [INTERNAL]

I got in contact with some people after this thread and the most friendly were crossboarders, most /jp/sies were just too awkward.

> That is when the who you are part begins to take relevance for both parties involved.

You usually take this off-line if you want more than an "anonymous relation". If you wear a tripcode wherever you go, it only looks like attention whoring. And it is exactly what it is in your case.

>> No.10121879,18 [INTERNAL]

"Shooting the shit" is just slang for "having an ordinary conversation about whatever".

And no, Anonymity has its uses. Sometimes in some situations, you really need to be able to says things "without any strings attached". But it's still not perfect, and in some situations (like forming meaningful friendships) having an identity makes things easier for all involved. There is always the trust issue.

Remember though, if you "have nothing worthy to say, to show, or do" then you're going to be screwed anyways (anonymous or not), right? Of course some people will hate you, some will love you, and most won't even care about you, but that's how life is in general I think.

>> No.10121879,19 [INTERNAL]

>>10121879,18
>"having an ordinary conversation about whatever"
Yes, good, you are almost there. Having a conversation where the only thing that counts is what is being said is what 4chan is all about. No focus on personas, signatures, reputation bars, karma, etc... If you need to go further, you take it offline.

>then you're going to be screwed anyways
This is completely irrelevant. The point was, if you need an identity on an anonymous board for people to notice you or even talk to you, then you most likely have nothing to do on 4chan.

>> No.10121879,20 [INTERNAL]

>>10121879,17
>>You usually take this off-line if you want more than an "anonymous relation".

That sounds like a thing unique to you. Not everyone operates this way. But not like it's a bad thing either though.

>>If you wear a tripcode wherever you go, it only looks like attention whoring.

You know, this is still opinion as well. Anons can attract attention just as easily and effortlessly. But when you think about it, on the internet whether the person receives any attention or not is something that lies outside that person's hands. That's why it's kind of a waste of energy to be concerned with "attention whoring", since on 4chan people like to draw attention to things just for the trolling sake of it.

>> No.10121879,21 [INTERNAL]

>>10121879,20
> Anons can attract attention just as easily and effortlessly.

That's the point of 4chan. Get attention because of what you say or do and not because you wave your tripcode/karma bar/avatar/signature around.

>> No.10121879,22 [INTERNAL]

>>10121879,19
>>the only thing that counts is what is being said

I would say this depends on the topic. For certain topics or situations (like this thread) just words aren't enough, due to factors like trust and accountability. That's one of the reasons why /jp/ has the huge problem with drama/meta about board content.

I think that's the time where you really need accountability/identities/reputation, because without that one random Anon has the potential to run the board on his own if he is loud and vocal enough (or if he goes into IRC and talks to a mod enough). It's bad that no actual headcount can be done on /jp/. So in the end one person's agenda can be implemented without taking the opinions/viewpoints of others into consideration (a weakness of 4chan that's shared with regular, traditional forums).

>>10121879,19
>>if you need an identity on an anonymous board for people to notice you or even talk to you

Uhh I think this is where we're having the disconnect. I agree with that. But I mean like, if people are noticing you on their own (without taking tripcodes into consideration) and they are interested in being friends with you, then you go "oh cool, here is my identity and contact info". Then you will be golden. If you use your identity on 4chan, and you are also courteous and nice, then it's even easier to make good friends and cool people will literally contact you on their own.

But my point was that some /jp/ers are simply "wandering anons" without any internet identity or contact info to bust out when appropriate (or they only have a throwaway email like anonjp@gmail.com). That's what will puts them at the big disadvantage when it comes to making friends. Actually this goes for tripcode users with random, throwaway trips as well.

Anyways, identities have its positive uses on 4chan, and they're not intrinsically evil. Moot's vision of 4chan culture isn't quite what you're thinking either; it's like this half-anonymous, half-accountability Facebook integration "please honor your ban" kind of thing.

>> No.10121879,23 [INTERNAL]

>>10121879,22
On the other hand attaching a name to an opinion, specially when it comes to meta and board direction is not good. You're now attaching past history, trust and reputation to an opinion that should be able to stand on its own as an anonymous post. The only advantage it actually brings is being able to follow a conversation with someone inside a long metathread, and even that's a stretch since after a short back and forth you're able to recognize the interlocutor by their post style.

Even worse than the loud vocal minority issue, you could have a single guy changing the board to their personal views just because of the name attached. They could claim better reputation and seniority. Hell, you see it even in anonymous, people trying to dismiss other's points just because they suspect they're newer or frequent other boards.
I like how /q/ works, with random post ID since it's one of the few topics that actually benefit from tracking a poster and if they're trying to just fake a large presence.

Some of the best friends I've made in 4chan over the years were not tripfags or people contacting me due to the name, but rather the ad-hoc collaborations that appear. Projects that come from dumb ideas in a thread and require more work outside the board so emails are quickly exchanged. And having a dedicated mail for that does wonders because nobody cares about your personal mail or identity.
Not saying that you're entirely wrong on this, even if you are on the idea of permatrip. But I think you're pretty blind to the other contact options people have used over the years in 4chan just because it wasn't your personal experience.

One last thing. Headcounts are meaningless, 4chan is not a democracy. And if majority rule was going to be measured, mods can check for IP and confirm that it's not the sameguy trying to get touhou banned or something.

>>You're now attaching past history, trust and reputation to an opinion

But like I said earlier, doing so is not necessarily a bad or intrinsically evil thing. Especially a quality like trust; when is that ever a bad quality for someone to possess?

Also a lot of the dangers you mention (seniority, using rep to change anything, claiming "better" reputation) aren't possible on 4chan. I think that's a huge aspect people forget or choose to ignore for whatever reason. You can post for years and years on 4chan, but in the end you still will never move up on the corporate internet ladder. Everyone is equally scum and a faceless user in moot's eyes. Now whether that's good or bad is also up for debate, but my point is that the dangers associated with identities on traditional forums simply don't exist on 4chan.

Thus, if the traditional dangers don't exist, then why are "permatrips" such a reprehensible thing again? Wouldn't "because culture" be a poor reason, mainly because the culture of 4chan entails nonsense to begin with (e.g. no gurls on the internet)? Plus, 4chan isn't exactly a 100% anonymous website to begin with. And it's definitely not 2ch, so their customs don't apply to us foreigners either (like when to sage and when you're not supposed to, which is something 99% of people never get right even on /ghost/).

>>But I think you're pretty blind to the other contact options people have used over the years in 4chan just because it wasn't your personal experience.

I think the real question is, why would anyone want a meaningful connection from someone who posts on /jp/? That's the reason they make throwaway "4chan only" accounts. They don't want a /jp/sy entering their real life, even if they don't admit it, and so they protect themselves by putting something anonymous in-between.

"Anonymous" isn't just a name. It's a wall of separation between your real self and your online identity, and even if you use a tripcode all day every day like ZUN here does we still have no idea who you are.

AoC, you should know this better than anyone. Didn't Eksi-kun send you text messages at four in the morning?

I refuse to give up on this board, i'm another "permatrip" user except I actually give a shit about /jp/.

Its that defeatist attitude which makes the board worse and worse, it doesn't help that the majority of the good userbase just wants to be left alone and doesn't like conflict. Just makes it that much easier to shit up everything else and not have your voice heard.

I can't think of any other place anywhere, online or off that hits the sweet spot in terms of user quality and active, persistent community. The casual nature of imageboards makes contacting other anonys more difficult, but that doesn't stop /jp/sies from trying to connect.
