Only around half of the characters in the list have been in the games or in any official books/manga in the last three or four years. Hell, Yuuka hasn't been mentioned anywhere since PMiSS and played a minor role in her only Windows appearance. Even fucking Medicine and the Aki sisters have been in the manga releases.

I love Reimu, she's always been my favorite touhou and always will be, but not because she's the main character.
To me it seems like a lot of people vote for other less popular characters just because they want to stand out more or be unique.

As for the the MCs who are usually always at the top of popularity rankings, it may have something to do with the fact that they get the most focus and screentime.

I guess you are right about the screentime, but in Touhou it's more complicated. If we are talking about the canon screentime, then that will make sense for Reimu. But Sakuya, Remilia and Flandre are also always top 10 and they are not in that many games, or even Alice. Touhou characters populary's strong point is the fandom. And there are some not MC that get same or maybe more fandom "screentime" than Reimu. I feel like it's an obligation for japs to vote for Reimu, like: "I'm going to vote for my favourite 2hu but before that i need to put Reimu in first place."

The annoying thing about these polls is that the choices are generally made for really half-assed reasons.

Like 98% of the cast isn't really fleshed out enough to have any sort of real feel for them at all. A good deal of them have never made an appearance outside of the infodump books (PMiSS/SoPM) and their initial game. People have their favorites, but they only came to those decisions because of fanart and doujin interpretations and the like.

The way some characters' popularity sways back and forth like crazy is an obvious giveaway to this. Alice being the biggest example from this year thanks to that MMD video.

Don't play that many, but in my experience few are so finicky about it - either the items have bigger collect boxes (later touhou would do this when you focus, jamestown) or they are more or less guided towards you. (exceed 3, crimson clover, kind of)

Alice has never struck particularly high in my books, I've always kind of found her boring. In terms of both canon and fanon. Either an unsocial dollmaker who aids Marisa or a deredere tsundere obsessive stalker of Marisa.

Her design I've never found particularly interesting, her original PC-98 design I also find somewhat uninteresting since I always found the original Alice in Wonderland outfit kind of boring design wise.

Thinking about it, I've never liked MariAli much either, I've always considered it my least favorite Marisa pairing. Not sure why. Maybe it's because I think all her other pairings have better chemistry and dynamics.

Maybe that period of Alice eats poop meme affected my impression of her subconsciously.

I've wondered this myself actually and I kind of agree with you. I think most people who vote for these things vote based on the adorable videos they have seen involving the characters and it's mostly (and obviously) the main characters+some sub characters that they use. The sub characters that they use become even more popular for appearing and will be chosen more often to appear in videos. That's why Alice and SDM crew are still up there.

A lot of the fans there attend Touhou events and actually buy things. Many fans even contribute to the fandom. All of the organized Touhou events are done by fans. I very rarely see them getting into shit flinging arguments as often as everyone does here and very rarely do I see them blowing aspie gaskets over memes they don't like. To top it off, they are far better at the games than almost anyone from the west. So yes, they are intrinsically better.
