I need to upgrade to windows 7 from xp but I'm scared that my legacy software won't work.

>> No.10107606

It's not like there's a need to hurry or anything, Windows 7 is going to be the last Windows you ever need to upgrade to anyway.

Unless you're using enterprise-level accounting software or a handful of poorly coded vidya, you're fine.

But XP is superior...

>> No.10107644

Doesn't seven have some XP-esque runtime for this purpose?

XP is fine. I get tired of looking at the same boring icons all the time though.

it was compared to vista. 7 is better. Even if not as trustful as ol'good xp. Still more advanced.

I cannot view 7 as better. I have heard that you can't even go back to the normal, non-shitty control panel.

I usually just run stuff like appwiz.cpl from the run command. Actually, I think I use run more than anything.

>> No.10107676

Dual boot.
Run xp on a vm.

Or don't upgrade.
Dx11 is a valid reason for wanting to switch, but there are no other reasons.
Yet, anyway. Sure, MS is dropping support for xp. As well as some newer apps. But that doesn't really matter much because you can always use older versions. And only unreasonably paranoid people care about security updates.
Xp will still be perfectly fine for at least 5 more years.

When you can't even finish the install before joining several botnets, you kind of start caring, you know.

It's been only a few years since then...

Debian seriously just works, even if all of the packages are a year old, they're highly tested and apt-get is nearly idiot-proof (you're fault if you add Sid repos).

However, if OP still wants to run Windows, I would suggest Win XP 64bit instead of going beyond to 7. Dx11 isn't really worth it unless you have to be bleeding-edge (Crysis2. Witcher2, Guild Wars 2, a lot of 2s). Most Japanese games continue to be designed with XP in as a target platform.

Personally, I'm typing this on a Gentoo laptop that runs Skyrimjob and 2hu at full frames, but Gentoo is for people who have they want from a system before they emerge anything, and enjoy PlaMo as a metaphor for how you want your computer to work.

I was resistant as anyone to switching from XP to 7, I was going to order a copy of XP to go with my new computer I built but I let my friend talk me into ordering 7.

No regrets, better and never had an issue with software running, and that was my main concern since my XP machine was full of programs I was terrified would not run on my new PC, was not an issue though.

The only problems I had were my firewall and antivirus (both were very old versions from way before win7).

Now that I have that sorted out, switching to Win7 was a huge quality of life improvement. It's much faster if you have a good computer, most notably after startup. It also alt+tabs gracefully, which is nice for fullscreen games. And now I couldn't live without Shift+win+arrow keys on my dual monitors.

As for early annoyances:
- You can still display quicklaunch in there, but pinning is better once you get used to it. Shift+click is your friend.
- Animations: turn them off under performance options to make your UI faster.
- Contextmenu on the taskbar: You can no longer close windows blindly. Get used to ctrl+W if you haven't already.
- Start menu: Now this is clearly inferior. It's small and it won't even expand. There is a hack that puts your start menu in your favorites folder, so that it can expand as a tree. I suggest you do that.

WINE is only shit if (1) You don't read the documentation and know how to configure the fucker (2) You're using Freeware video drivers with it.

Outpost for firewall, and Nod32 for antivirus. Now I have the latest versions, and they both work fine. It only felt bad because I paid money for the older ones, and they were still usable on XP.

I'm really sorry to hear that, then (and thanks for notifying me, I haven't used Win natively since XPsp2). There's seriously no work around for that unless you're a wizard who can hexedit iosys to accept the old HAL as a module.

Microsoft development team a shit.
