Well, I'm not defending what he did by any means, but sometimes you need a big shock to "desensitize" people. If we hadn't had time to reflect on what he did and question how relevant his hobbies were, it's possible that things like anime and manga would have been forced "underground". It's similar to whenever some kid shoots someone and everyone blames video games, so we can all realize how stupid the media are for blaming video games, then play more video games.
