An otaku can only be a Japanese person.

A weeaboo can only be a non-Japanese person.

"Weeaboo" means "anime-style" aka "weeaboo game" "this looks too weeaboo" or "what is this weeaboo shit"

Otaku is basically the same except in japan it can apply to anyone who is too obsessed with one thing. Train otaku (actually covering a set of very different otaku that fall under the category of trains) are an example of how this doesn't need to apply to fans of anime, manga and video games, but often does.

What about a second generation pure Japanese born and raised in a foreign country? And where are the Anno quotes!?

>> No.10070317

>>10070291
There was an enlightening discussion of it in the Anno thread from last night, starting at this post: >>10064225

>You shouldn't care about where you stand as an "otaku". Quite frankly, if you aren't Japanese the term doesn't apply to you. Imagine a Japanese guy calling himself part of the "toonami generation". Without exposure to the conditions and setting that brought about the subculture, how could you possibly label yourself part of it?

It starts there. Follow the train of replies.

>> No.10070333

Otaku is somebody who likes japanese stuff

Weeaboo is somebody who wants to be japanese and hates the fact he/she is not japanese

>> No.10070335

An otaku is someone who is passionately obsessed with a specific hobby or interest. A weeaboo is someone who is only interested in being seen as part of the 'sub-culture' surrounding anime, manga, Japanese video games, etc.

Something like that, I guess?

It's one of those stupid words where the word "おたく" and the word "otaku" don't mean the same thing.

Not that, he means that the west has a different usage of the word compared to Japan.

See: hentai, anime

>> No.10070404

You sure? He typed it in ひらがな. おたく and オタク are different words.

>> No.10070437

>>10070404
to my understanding people using "おたく" "オタク" mean the same thing anyway. the original has kanji.

the fact that he says "otaku" and not "オタク" makes me think that he was just trying to distinguish between japanese and english text.

I don't think so. Weeaboo is really old. I don't even know when or where it popped up and entered the modern western net-language. I just remember it's always been used to describe the more obsessive fans of Japan as a whole rather than a particular subculture (e.g. otaku). Furthermore, the obsession is only to the surface value rather than the substance beneath it. Ask a weeaboo about Japanese history, and they can't tell you the difference between Edo and Meiji periods. I doubt there's an actual definition, though, it seems to have taken on "hipster" status in its devaluation as a categorizational item. Still, we can see the difference between otaku, weeaboo, and japanophile.

Otaku: Uniquely Japanese phenomenon and a term used to describe those that are part of this particular subculture.

Weeaboo: Thos with a shallow/surface interest; derogatory term concocted specifically to deride this group. No one self-labels as a weeaboo unironically.

Japanophile: Those with an actual, vested interest in the culture at large. Generally accepted by others as a legitimate hobby/interest.

My definitions are:

Otaku - someone who likes Japanese culture etc but are mature and not annoying about it.

Weeaboo - obnoxious 11 year olds who are annoying and immature. You know what I mean by this.

I would class myself as the former, by description.

>> No.10072649

Otaku (おたく / オタク?) is a Japanese term used to refer to people with obsessive interests, particularly (but not limited to) anime, manga or Japanese video games.

Weeaboo is someone who wants to be Japanese

>> No.10072656

While we're on the subject, why have we distinguished a difference between "ecchi" and "H"? "ecchi" is the romanization of エッチ correct? エッチ is just the pronunciation of the letter "H" which represents Hentai? Perhaps I'm looking too at it wrongly but it seems these two definitions should be the same.

Japanese call Western/foreign otaku, 'otaku'. If it is just a 'uniquely Japanese phenomenon', then they'd be calling foreigners something else. It's not like they have a catch-all term for 'Western otaku', 'Chinese otaku' or 'European otaku'. You're probably just mistaking it for 'hikikomori'.

'Otaku' has always been 'somebody with extreme interest in a certain hobby'. Stop pushing your own definition.
