But seriously, I hear good things about this book. Is it actually a good guide? I'm always afraid the manga thing is just a gimmick, but that one physics book was okay.

I didn't use the book (ended up using both Genkis instead), but I do own it. It's a good book. There's very little fluff, and the author pulls frames from real manga like Shin-chan to explain the grammar.

I've also heard that the author references information from the book "Understanding Basic Japanese Grammar", which is also an awesome resource.

I see, thank you. Do you think it would stand alone, or is it better as a supplement to a textbook? I like having the same information written in different ways as long as it's consistent (it helps me learn, not sure if I'm alone in this).

I've seen at least a couple of people that only used Manga Way alone, and learned everything else by reference, so it's probably fine standalone.

Comparing it to the Japan Time's series of textbooks (since they're the only ones I've used), I'd say the book gives you a decent chunk of Genki 1, a smattering of Genki 2, and even a couple of topics from "Intermediate Approach to Intermediate Japanese" (aka Genki 3).

I think the book is cheap enough to work as a budget learner's base, or as in interesting supplement. I think I may get more use out of it once I start transitioning to real manga.

Because Tae Kim's Guide, even with its numerous mistakes, is still much more useful than Genki
