The party system itself blows.
It discourages free thinking. People just vote for someone purely on party rather than individual views.
And the system enables them by giving the "vote straight party" option.

Are there any systems of democracy (even just hypothetical ones) where you vote on specific issues, or perhaps specific people for different roles? I know a parliament or senate or even the general public do this for some issues, but I'm thinking something more akin to a political survey.

1. Should weed be legal?
[ ] "Yeah dude, 420 blaze it" -- Joe R. Stoner, Freedom Party
[ ] "For medical purposes only" -- Dr. Linxon, Sensible Party
[ ] "NO >:(" -- Random Old Fart, Evil Party

Then they tally up the general public's votes, and have a mixed government (e.g. if everyone voted for John Smith to be Head of Foreign Affairs, then he would be Head of Foreign Affairs), or we get a custom policy based on what the people want (and appropriate people are hired for the job).
Obviously there'd be some clashing, but it's dumb that we have this binary system where you pick all of Column A or all of Column B, and Columns C through F might as well not exist.

Romney was a crazy psycho and it's good that he didn't win.

He spent 25,000 dollars on fireworks anticipating his victory, he was too arrogant to even consider the idea that he was going to lose (even though all of the polls would have told you that) so he never bothered to prepare a concession speech, and he went into shock after hearing the news that he lost.

Because most of these people don't actually want a smaller government, they want minimized _federal_ government.
The 10th amendment gives powers to the states if there's nothing on a higher level that says otherwise.
And usually with state constitutions that power is likewise pushed down to the decision of local county/city governments.
You have more freedoms this way because if you don't like the way something is done you can just move. But with a strong centralized federal system you'd be forced to leave the country.

It's not just a few, and they don't realize the contradiction, sadly. These people don't like to be confronted with the facts, so when people like me try to at least question their thinking (or lack thereof), it just leads to name-calling. Obama being called a Muslim communist is rather mild for these people, to be honest.

I personally feel this lack of thought is symptomatic of religious fundamentalism, but that's a very sensitive topic here. It's why the atheists of the united states are so much more adamant and aggressive towards Christians. The feeling is that we need to kill their establishment as quickly as possible, because the anti-rational thinking that goes into justifying the existence of a god can also be used to justify these awful policies.

The result of this ignorance is this tea-party 'movement'. While incredibly destructive to political discourse, it seems that it will be beneficial to the democrats in the long term because it is dividing the republican party from the inside and creating candidates like Romney, who no moderate can vote for in good conscience.

Somehow the forward thinkers have managed to educate my generation well enough to at least look at the issues, which is why so many of the young voters are liberal... but it shouldn't have to come to hijacking our education system. I suppose they have done what needed to be done, though.

I appended an "insecure" tripcode so I could verify my identity on ghost boards.
a few months later I decided to slightly change my name. I was never the Tokiko you are implying.

It's pretty obvious that you're Robert trying to get people to think I'm you though.

Wow. That's shocking, as a white man who voted for Obama.

But the older white men are dying off, slowly but surely. An election or two from now, I think there will be a major shift in both numbers.

I'd have to say that's quite an extreme. But yes, I do agree we are in trouble currently seeing how partisan our Congress have become.
I'm more worried about the loss of the power balance between the Dem and Rep as the Rep shy away the more moderate folks in the US because of the Tea Party's influence.

Murder isn't a bad thing, it's a way of life here in America. An acceptable alternative would be that blacks don't count as people so it's not technically considered murder.
