This is true in a way. IIRC, a lot of classical music was composed just for the sake of sounding "classical," so that an orchestra had something to play for a theater full of wealthy white people. Even back then, you could only listen to Air On The G String or Jesu, Joy Of Man's Desiring so many times.

I would suppose that post-Gershwin artpop music is the true spiritual successor to oldschool Romanticism and Baroque styles of classical.
