An asteroid has made contact with the earth's surface, thereby sending large amounts of dust into the atmosphere and creating large scale global climate change. The impact sustained an approximate force of 1 trillion tons, and for this reason the asteroid is suspected to have a diameter of ~2 km. No contact has been established with the earth; however this is most likely due to the large amount of dust particulate in the upper atmosphere and possible effects of the impact. Furthermore, while it is assumed that the members of the space station are the only known humans alive this is, in actuality, a conclusion reached due to a lack of verifiable data. It is probable that a substantial amount of humans are still alive. NASA has said, "[an impact of this magnitude] would kill a substantial (but unknown) fraction of the Earth's human population".
