Speaking to people who've applied for JET, and some who have worked for the Japanese govt and been involved in language education, JET can be really tough to get into.

Just having a 4-year degree won't land you the position. GPA is definitely a factor. Even the name of the university can be a deciding point. Did you go to BFE University or did you go to Duke?

If you want a job teaching English, and don't mind (most likely) paying for your plane ticket over, I'd apply to eikaiwai (English conversation schools) directly. gaijinpot and ohaiyosensei always have listings.

Be willing to work in a non-metropolitan area will land you a job much easier. Then once you're there, if you want, begin searching for an eikaiwa in a big city. You're already in the country, and you already have visa sponsorship, so you should have better luck.

This man speaks truth. And being able to explain grammatical concepts is beyond helpful. If you can accurately explain the differences between a past participle and a present participle, you'll impress the interviewers.

arcades in japan are full of serious business people, "blowing off steam" is the last thing you do there

When I started the JET I was going to do the full 5 years, but it's tiring, and you soon get frustrated. In the end I only did 3, but I'm probably going to go back soon and try and get full citizenship, and teach English full time.

I can teach reading fine, as I had to teach my brother who didnt learn how to read until he was 10

Its grammar I have trouble teaching.

So this JET program, its some 5 year thing? what happens after 5 years are up? Do they just end the program support for you, and you can continue to live/work there?

I personally didn't do JET, but I know people who've done it, or worked at AEON, Geos, Interac, etc. Being able to demonstrate competency in regards to teaching grammar is great, though if you get hired without knowing it, you'll survive. That is, as long as you look at the book and refresh yourself on the grammar BEFORE going to class.

There's nothing worse than trying to teach someone something without knowing EXACTLY what you're talking about, because there WILL be questions.

JET itself is a one-year contract with an option to renew up to a five-year limit.

I ultimately quit teaching because I wasn't passionate about it and felt there was no career advancement and I wasn't really enjoying my time. Oh, and where I was (a private eikaiwa), I had such a weird work schedule. M-F, but every day was different. Basically, I worked from 10 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. every day, but with weird off hours between. In total, I worked about 20 - 22 hours a week. It was technically considered a part-time job by Japanese standards, but the pay was great. I wish I loved teaching, because I would've been set for life there.

Ex-poker fag here. Online poker is a grind and you do not think. There is little strategy to it, it all becomes second nature with experience and turns into a mind-numbing grind. There truly is money in online poker and you do not need any real world experience or education to do it. Just turn on your autism and start playing.

I haven't played in almost a full year, but when I did i made close to $30k in profits from donkaments (multi table tournaments) casually playing over the course of about 18 months. Every sunday, and occasionally other days, I would devote the better half of the day to sitting at my desktop clicking fold fold fold and reraise all in.

Only reason I stopped playing was because I lack the motivation mainly due to the fact that I no longer need the money. I would recommend it to all fellow shut ins, just prepare to devote yourself to it and immerse yourself. That forum link that was posted is the best community for it and a good start.

Be wary of the poker people, not saying they are, but they could be members of the sites trying to lure people in. Not everyone makes money on these things, most people don't make money, that's how they work. It's just down to luck.

Look how dumb you are. Major poker sites are already established, have an existing playerbase, and earn/pay out millions daily. I don't see anyone shilling a no-name questionable site that may or may not keep your money in canvas bags in airport lockers. As for twoplustwo, anyone who has any modicum of motivation to improve and win goes there. I have a total of like 10 dollars deposited and even I know this.

Nobody here is giving "promotion codes" or something like that.

Poker is not really a game of luck, everyone receives good and bad cards but not everyone knows how to play them.

Isn't that based off luck?
You can't possibly say that a bad hand will never turn into a good one because of luck.

Everyone will receive good and bad cards when they sit at the table but you have to use your brain to discover if your opponent has something better than you, so it's not a game of luck.

Is online poker really just grinding as said by >>6870606 ?

If we wanted to get into online poker, what kind of rules should we follow? For instance, is there a minimum amount of money we should put in to make sure we get a good kick start and what kind of maximum should we be looking at?

>> No.6871186

>>6871171

First you have to decide if you want to be a cash game or tournament player, they are totally different games and start playing with fake money until you become really good then you can try to play with real money and see how good you are.

Read books and see how the pros play.

>> No.6871200

I know some people that make money from channels on Youtube or Blip.tv. For example, people that cast Starcraft 2 matches seem to do OK.

>> No.6871231

I would suggest playing heads-up sit-n-goes or heads-up cash (2player poker). In these formats you wait for bad players to play you, they are the easiest games to profit from. You can read up on basic strategy on http://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/185/heads-up-sng/

it is possible to work your way up from 2$ husngs. it would require about 50-100$ to get started I believe.
