おはようDJT、1つ質問があります

「名前」に代わって何のために祈りますか?

My friend asked me how you'd say "what should I pray for on [name's] behalf." I heard you can also use の代わりに to mean "on behalf of" in addition to "in exchange for," but online it seems like に代わって is used more. Is the sentence I wrote correct or a shitshow? Thanks.

>some situation which seldom occurs has now occurred and one can either make use of it or, to one’s regret, cannot make use of it.
that is one of its uses, yes.

i've actually used せっかく to illustrate to a friend how 'different' japanese can be. so if you look at the kanji 折角, that's already a bit weird... 'bent horn'? what? according to the kojien, there's a theory that during late han-dynasty, there was some warrior who wore a horned helmet. one day the helmet got wet in the rain and one of its horns got bent not sure that's how horns work but whatever. this then became his trademark and people would begin to DELIBERATELY immitate that feature ... deliberately, on purpose, extra, going through the trouble of (bending the horn). so maybe it was based on biting some dude's fashion style initially. but that doesn't really matter

anyway, what can you do with it?

1. extra, specifically, specially
>せっかく作った料理 the dish made specifically for (occasion / person)
>~貯めた金 the money one went to the trouble of saving up
>~忠告したのに even though i specifically advised to...
>~来たのが無駄になる (having gone through the trouble of) coming (for a specific reason) all this way for nothing, came for nothing

2. attributively with の in front of nouns
to express that something should not be let go to waste or have been in vain
often to signal recognition or thankfulness for the trouble s.o. else went through or kindness they showed you
>~の機会 an ideal chance (that happens to present itself and should not be passed up)
>~のお勧め your kind recommendation (that you went through the trouble of giving {thank you})
>~の休み the rare, eagerly awaited or precious vacation [e.g. since you rarely get time off let's go far / even though you almost never get time off you still had to work from the hotel room]
>~の日曜日も雨だった of course had to rain on sunday of all things

3. in the form of せっかく(の)ですが
to politely turn down someone's offering, 'I'm sorry, even though you went through all this trouble, did this specficially for me, i recognize it's a waste... but i still refuse'
>~のお話ですが that is a very kind offer but ...
>折角ですが、この話はやはり打切って貰いましょう it's very kind of you to try to help but let's not talk about it anymore

Inner monologue has become a constant dialogue with imaginary girlfriend. When I play video games, I pretend that she's watching me over the shoulder and I narrate to her what I'm doing in the game, etc.
I read relationship advice normie forums to collect realistic stories of how real life couples interact with each other. I save the stories in a database so I can roleplay the situations in my head with my waifu.
Falling asleep takes 30-60 minutes because every night I play out a story with her before I stop concentrating and let myself fall asleep. It's kind of a lullaby for me.

singularity assumes limitless machine intelligence growth (or at least until it's strongly super-human)
It's not that I find the most radical predictions impossible, but they are undeniably highly speculative, given that we don't actually have a clue how intelligence truly works, and what obstacles are there to overcome before we replicate it in silicon.
So far one milestone/functionality gained after another turns out to not be at the core of human level intelligence (from chess to language manipulation most recently) despite what we could predict.
It's anywhere between "singularity in a decade" and "building ladder to the moon" or "still stupid, but much faster".
Exponential reasoning of the type "infinite population growth" "infinite machine IQ" "infinite global warming" most commonly turns out to be absurd in retrospect.
The main reason I'm sneering at AI doomers is because they so often act like hysterical cultists irl, but I would lie if I said I'm completely unconcerned about AI.

You want to be happy, but when you think about things you have edgy thoughts like life might be meaningless and no one will remember you and oh what does it all mean etc. Eventually, you decide that even if that’s true, there’s no profit in thinking about it, so you choose to believe that everything happens for a reason, and your work and family and friends and life are meaningful, and by believing in this reality you mostly seem to create it.

But still, you run into the occasional edgelord who insists on promoting a grimmer view. They annoy you: Do they think they’re wise or courageous? Do they think they’re pointing out something everyone else hasn’t thought about? All they’re doing is pushing a view that has absolutely no advantage to anyone, and ruining things for everyone who is trying to inhabit a better reality. And for what? Probably just to get some attention for themselves! But of course, saying that out loud would only help the edgelords so instead you mock them on superficial grounds to punish their defection. Slowly, you forget about your reasons for doing this, and just remember that edgelords are lame.

i agree with this, but we know that llms get more smarter if you throw in more compute for some reason. also we know that once they're smarter than the smartest human, our intelligence won't be needed any more to deal with all that shit (iterative self-improvement). this is all in theory of course, but at this point i think 5 years are more then enough to see whether this theory holds true or not.
and all that assuming there won't be ANY software-based breakthroughs, only more powerful gpus

also consider that theorethically there's nothing stopping something from being more intelligent that humans. we consider it being a limit for obvious solipsistic reason, but (again in theory) if we can make a 1m llm reach the intelligence of a month, and 1b llm the intelligence of a human, there's nothing stopping 1t llm being way smarter than us (made up number but you get the point)

this is provably false, because in theory you could take gpt4 with vision, make it run on a very fast harder in order to take in input 24 frames per second of video + vocal commands and at the same time output body movements of the robot it embodies. this is simply a compute problem at this point and it will be solved very soon

1.Reading redo of healer.
It's more based than I remember, the villains are deranged homosexuals and/or niggers.
2.Finally reached 500 cards in my mining deck. Learning kanji for a lot of words that I knew by ear for a long time already. This mismatch, not present while learning any language with a European alphabet (or like...Korean) is frustrating sometimes. Adds quite a bit of extra work.
Not really complaining, this ridiculous and beautiful writing system is a big part of the reason why I'm learning Japanese in the first place.

I admit I find this whole conversation about AI unsettling as it shakes the optimistic disposition I'm doing my best to maintain.
Development of full fledged AIs would cast a shadow and raise unpleasant questions about our place in the universe, only adding to what other advances in sciences had already done.
I, for one, am not content to be an equivalent of a meat machine. We must be fundamentally distinct, and above mere matter, be ensouled if there's any meaning to anything at all.
Yet I only have spiritual hopes, not beliefs, so I already resigned myself to the prospect of living out my life with deep existential anxiety always at least slightly present, like an annoying chronical disease.
For all the wonders that nerds promise AI can deliver (assuming it doesn't destroy our civilization) I would rather not have it, so that malady could trouble me less.

That's interesting bc when speaking with people like this I'm assuming they're the ones who are coping.
Though unlike with most arguments with strangers, I genuinely believe I'm being charitable by assuming that, because the alternative is that you posses some utterly bizarre psychological makeup. Seriously, I'd have an easier time finding common ground with a libtard or islamic extremist, that's just a fucked up way to live.

We're fundamentally in the same boat.
Do *you* feel special by acting tough?
If I believed you to be fully sincere and that you thought this through properly, do you think that by sweeping the problem under the rug, or asserting that there's no rug and no problem and that you're OK with being a flesh puppet you actually paint yourself as superior to me in any way?
>>46644690
I think it has more to do with the basic axioms we hold as to what makes life worth living.
As an agnostic, I have no complete certainty as to whether or not materialism is the full picture (that's kinda my main problem...) but I believe fully that this view is not compatible with meaning or ethics.
Consider that the amount of ink spilt over this, and the increasing infestation of our culture by nihilism has nothing to do with people being less rational or less smart than you.

In the middle of the night, I woke up from a dream.
It was something called "brain porn,"
but it wasn't real porn; it was a pilgrimage through the brain, a journey showing all its functions.

I reached a cluster of neurons,
and the leader among them was kind.
He showed me that he could turn lights on and off,
and he talked about the amygdala.
To go down there, he said I should take the spiral path,
but I boldly jumped straight down instead.
The moment I hit the floor, I woke up.
And now, I'm here, risen from a small death.

Death is nothing to fear.
We are pure electricity.
The moment before birth was eternity.
If you can be born once, you can be born again.
We are electricity, here with me,
interacting with itself.
