Nah, the difference is ACBJD and Faithz and other dealers like them are authorized resellers, so in addition to providing seller support between the creator and the customer, they also provide customer support for the buyer if something gets fucked up along the way. Creators choose to work with shops like ACBJD to distribute their work to overseas customers, vs most taobao resellers who will scalp you within an inch of your life for the privilege of buying some doll socks at a 300% markup and can't do anything for you if that doll shirt comes without a button on it. Put another way, ACBJD, Faithz, and other stores like them are regional specialty stores for the international market, while Etsy resellers are like people selling newly-released GPU for 5k on eBay because they know some poor bastard will shell out because they truly don't know any better on where to shop for 'em.

3D mouths are a bit of a higher difficulty thing to pull off than a regular faceup. For a regular faceup the general idea is:
1. Have a plan in mind - general idea of the expression, how thick the eyeliner should be, where eye corners should be, where the eyebrows are/how they're slanted, mouth shape. I'd suggest taking a picture of the head blank and doing a mockup in photoshop or you paint program of choice.
2. Seal the head before doing any work. Most artists will have their own number of layers here but the base layer I'd say at least two coats of sealant to prevent staining the head.
3. Sketch the faceup with light watercolor pencil. You can skip this and go straight to acrylic but it's easier to erase and correct than paint and will give you a good guideline for painting over. Some people will also do blushing with the soft pastel dust here as well.
4. Seal once you're happy with the sketch.
5. Paint over your sketch where necessary with acrylics, usually dark brown/black on eyeliner and eyebrows and mouth lining. I would suggest thinning your paints and using a very thin brush to keep it sharp. If your paint won't go opaque, another layer of sealant will give you a better surface to work on.
6. If you're happy with your work, seal it when it's done
7. Optionally after you've sealed everything, you can add a vinyl-safe gloss varnish on areas you'd like glossy - sometimes done on lips or on the waterline of the eyes
It's not too different from painting any other kind of doll except you don't have to paint the actual eyeballs. You can honestly even look at monster high customization videos to see the process, it's the same idea if you divorce art style from the mix

>> No.46444682

>>46444664
For 3D mouths the process is generally
1. Sand off the existing mouth features.
2. Carve a mouth hole - often done with a dremel tool
3. Clean and sand the mouth hole smooth.
4. Sculpt inner mouth with clay and affix to the inside of the hole
5. Do the faceup like any other head
With regular faceups you can remove them with acetone (make sure to wash it off quickly as it can be absorbed by the vinyl) with no real damage so messing up isn't really a big deal, but subtractive/3D mods are very easy to destroy a head with

Take lots of bad ones.

I'm serious, too. I've taken around 50,000 photos in my lifetime and 95% of them are nothing, or they're just... memories. I learned to take good photos by taking lots of bad ones, anon, and learning from my mistakes along the way. A good camera doesn't mean anything if you don't know how to use it; my first "real camera" was my DSi and I used it until I literally broke the shoulder buttons. Got some good shots with it too despite all of its many, many shortcomings.

Just enjoy the experience of posing and playing with your doll, or whatever you photograph, and don't over-analyze what you're doing right now. Look over them afterwards, and you'll see what you like in your shots and what you wish you had done differently. Learn what the settings on your device mean and fiddle with 'em until you get the results you like out of whatever it is you're using. There's an anon here posting photos from a gameboy camera (and I love them.) Just have fun with it -- we have some regular posters here who've been visibly improving from month to month despite not changing their gear. They're just experimenting and learning by doing, and it's honestly one of my favorite parts of (usually) being the bread baker over these last few years.

Take lots of photos and you'll improve more than you ever would watching tutorials and reading books. Because a lot of taking good photos isn't just taking something aesthetically appealing, anon. It's about figuring out what a good photo means for you!

This is one of the only videos I found that explains the sealing step, if you need a visual aid, I do it this way and haven't noticed any problems. I'll do it outside and set the head in the box it came in while it dries either in my bathroom with the vent or my garage. Wear a respirator, gloves and some kind of eye cover.
I use vallejo for my faceups but I also have citadel on hand. Having reference photos helps a lot with the faceup design.
I'll do the 2 initial coats of sealant
General outlines with water color and I choose to just go into acrylics then (eyes/eyebrows/lips). I usually deviate from my design at this point due to my skill level.
Sealant coats once your satisfied with the above.
Pastels for blush followed by more sealant.
It's just practice at that point, the brushes from volks are actually pretty nice if you need some. Have reasonable expectations for the final product, even if its "mediocre" you'll still have a lot of fun. I love the whole process.

I'm fascinated by strung BJD. How do they work, mechanically? I know about the stringing, how it looks and how it is applied. I can also see how they keep all the pieces together thanks to the tension, but how are they able to hold a pose? Intuition tells me that as soon as you turn a joint the tension in the string should try to snap back into a straight line, but it doesn't.

>> No.46456423

>>46456404
They're not strung so tight that they snap back. There's some give, so they can move, but still under tension, so it all holds together. Resin is a balancing act --- if the string is too tight, the doll can't pose; if it's too loose, it can't pose, either. It's about finding that middle-ground.

>> No.46456631

>>46456404
The ball joints are designed in such a way that the string is still pulling more or less straight when the joint is bent, so the attrition from the joint parts pressing together wins over the string pulling everything straight. This is why there are those big slits in the joints: it's so the elastic cord can keep pulling straight. Then you have a few things that help joints stay put like notches in the sculpt to lock things at extreme angles and such. Sueding adds attrition inside the joints and it looks like it does a whole lot if a doll won't hold a pose. Some people use wire too but I think wire is more of a last resort sort of thing?
I am also fascinated with strung dolls. I love simple but deep engineering like that. I also like the fact you will always only need some bungie cord to restring and you're not bound to a company's replacement parts when things wear out.
Apparently resin dolls are also pretty tough and outside of facediving on hard floor it's hard to damage them. I thought that if you mistakenly let go of a leg while it kicked forward it could send resin chips flying.

I think that the lack of male dolls do seem to be due to being more male oriented, but it's perhaps also due companies assuming that people wouldn't want a male doll and there would be no market for it. That was some time ago though.
It's closer tp 50/50 split gender demographics now. The Imomodoll accounts often had people spamming where's the 1/4 male before it officially dropped and now it seems that people are beginning to spam where's the 68 male body on there. While the Chinese BJD fandom isn't representative of all BJD fans, there's definitely more interest and demand for a male body, yet companies still seem to ignore/delay it since girls probably sell well enough. It's probably also not too hard to mod a body, but it's still irritating how there's barely anything available.

>> No.46463085

>>46463002
Ah yes, the struggle. When Imomodoll finally drop their 65cm body we will be free from this hell. Parts are absolutely the hassle here, but if you wanna go that route look into 3D printed parts! They're the most available option for 1/3 male parts at this time.

>>46463016
Yeah that's a lot of it, but also Japan's culture of exclusivity = value has a lot to do with it. Volks has male bodies! You can buy them! But only if you can physically make it to one of their physical stores to do it, because that makes them Special and Valuable and a point of pride to have one -- and that cultural viewpoint is more valuable in their perspective than the cold hard reality that this process it a massive pain in the ass for everyone, even domestic customers who aren't near Doll Point, let alone the entire rest of the world. You might think "but if they released it for everyone it would literally print money", and you would be correct, but consider this: male dolls aren't as in-demand (so they think) as female dolls, so that means any time they do release one it is a gamble (again, in their viewpoint.) By keeping the supply of male bodies limited, they ensure that whenever they do release a male doll, it's guaranteed to be a financial success (reducing the perceived risk) by people buying them just to shell the bodies.

It makes sense from a Japanese Business Perspective but it's still a massive pain in the ass that I resent.

I don’t think male dolls are as popular in general, it’s just a more vocal group clamoring for male bodies. Even among female collectors I see more women who own female dolls exclusively than ones who have a mix. I primarily buy and follow 1/6 Azone collectors and even though they’ve released a decent number of male dolls that frequently pop up secondhand, I don’t really see many people collect them. As for Volks, I think they keep certain bodies exclusive so they can make more money from Dream Choice, so you have to buy the entire doll. That’s just my theory though.

About this exclusivity thing I felt something similarly annoying with action figures and that's why I decided to quit collecting them (and move to BJDs like I've been wanting to for a while) but at the same time it wouldn't be too implausible that the domestic market in Japan is indeed big enough to overshadow whatever complications foreigners might have. The whole manga/anime industry seems to be still primarily domestic after all despite being so popular in the West. I assume there could be a similar situation for figures and also dolls. Maybe it really isn't worth it for them to cater to whatever slice of market that isn't the domestic Japanese market, so if that market is not interested in boy dolls, they won't make them.
I assume the Chinese market gets a bigger share from exports so they're more yielding when it comes to demand.

Male dolls, especially in the fashion doll space, often suffer from a problem prevalent in men's fashion in general: lack of variety and flair. Female dolls have a much wider array of clothing and haristyles available to designers and customizers while still being conventionally cute, pretty, etc, but male dolls often end up being designed pretty conservatively and end up boring. In BJD terms I've seen tons of women with many beautiful male dolls in all sorts of clothing, and I think vinyl male dolls would sell well as a base for customizing. It's just that for fullset dolls, male dolls end up kinda samey and less adventurous or interesting or appealing

It's not quite an issue with the available clothing being too conservative, but a lack of creativity. I have yet to see a male doll that isn't dressed in normal, if not fancy, clothing. Tuxedos, coats, comfortable winter wear and so on can all look great. I have yet to see a male doll wearing clothes a normal man or model wouldn't.

What I do agree is that female dolls can to a degree fulfill fashion niches the males do, but males cannot fulfill a few niches females can without looking off.

Basically anything that exists for female dolls can be found for male dolls, too, from little MSD twinks to absurdly large ID75 guys with tits bigger than their heads, the only problem is that all the good shit is made by individual studios of roughly 1-5 people, made to order in very small windows of time, and largely inaccessible to the western market due to language barriers and lack of western social media presence to announce releases of shit. Taobao resellers unironically help in this situation just by making people aware of what's out there so you can track down the original creators via a proxy later. I try to list all the ones I know of in the guide, too, but at the end of the day the release windows of these things are just small-scale by necessity. If there's a creator you really enjoy the work of, I recommend grabbing an alerts bot like Distill (an addon for most web browsers) and individually setting it up to ping you whenever the content of their web page changes.

The dress, face, hair and even a lot of the body are all womanly. While there's many types of masculinity, is it really a conversation about male style if they're almost a woman just with a male torso? Perhaps my eyes are simply untrained, but to me it's just female fashion applied to an absurdly feminine man. Though where is that line even drawn? I dunno.

No you have a point. Societally if a garment hard-edged, made of stiff materials, conservative in the amount of skin revealed, or even simply dark in color, it will be viewed as masculine. If something soft, flowing, delicate, revealing, or even simply pastel in color, we consider it feminine. In reality, it really does boil down to the vibes, and while there are classical depictions of both, the styles have varied wildly throughout history. More than anything else, the real challenge is in just finding options beyond the basics -- once you do, you can do whatever you like.

Historically, male fashion is derived from military outfits, and, more recently, work clothes. So it's inherently associated with covering the body and a general feel of sturdiness. Fashion is also meant to enhance the characteristics of the body, so while in women it wants to emphasize the breasts (like cleavage) or hips (skirts), in men it's all about making the shoulders, trapezius etc. look bigger and the hips narrower which you generally achieve with more fabric rather than less. It's not a super hard rule, but for the most part it can't be helped.

Maybe for some people. For me, not personally. I've seen some sex dolls I'd consider buying for photography if I had the money and space, Aotume look cute. Despite both ostensibly being about dolls, the sex doll hobby is pretty dissimilar to the ball-jointed doll hobby between the scales involved, the materials in use, and obviously what people tend to do with their dolls.

My dolls are TPE which is porous so if you keep rubbing them with baby oil you can eventually lift the dye back out of the material
How much time and effort it takes to get it out depends on how deeply the stain set, for example the same doll got a stain around her neck from a cheap leather choker that I got out in a couple weeks since it was just a contact stain, the dress stain was bad since I left her leaning against a wall overnight wearing it and was pressed against her butt by the wall, fortunately it was only one cheek

What's the go-to way to store clothes? I plan on using my doll's box for the time being and I suppose you can stuff em all into a plastic box but I assume it gets messy when you've got a sizable hoard

>> No.46522127

smart people use plastic storage containers so they can lay them flat. I store anything nice flat, and things that don't fear wrinkles like socks go into a ziploc bag in a dresser drawer.

I thougt so. Now... I want to hide the doll when I'll have people around the house. If I'm putting her away in a box does that mean I should take the wig/clothes off every time or they'll wrinkle horribly even in the span of a few hours?

>> No.46522362

>>46522232
Depends on the hairstyle and clothing, but simple things like shirts, pants, and non-braided hairstyles will probably be just fine! A special consideration is that dark and strongly-colored clothes might transfer pigment onto the doll's body and leave a stain behind, so leaving them dressed in such attire isn't advised. Black and red are the worst offenders on this front. Stain-prevention suits and so on can help prevent this, but it's really down to the garment. I've had dolls wearing dark clothes full-time and nothing's happened, and others I've had stain from brief contact with an accursed skirt I got in a lot of clothes off ebay. Always test on a spare piece of vinyl (or the bottom of your doll's foot, unless you're particularly interested in them) if you're worried.

>> No.46522970

>>46522362
How bad is it with resin vs. vinyl? All I know is resin stains less but should I still worry? Like if I put black stockings on the doll will they stain instantly, 10 minutes, 2 hours, 2 days? ACBJD sent a free melamine sponge with the order so I assume it's something I cannot avoid.

Can you iron doll clothes very gently or are they particularly delicate?

>> No.46524501

>>46522970
Anything has the potential to stain (including things meant for humans,) but vinyl is just more susceptible by default. And it really depends on the individual piece of clothing. Some stain instantly, some literally never stain. Most things fall somewhere in the middle. I would say most clothes don't stain as a general rule; lighter-colored clothing is almost always a safe bet. Rinsing/washing new clothes in the sink under cold water can also help free up loose dye, but that's not possible for every garment. At the end of the day, sometimes you just have to go for it. As for the melamine sponge, it can also be used to smooth away any little scuff marks that might develop over time, so staining isn't always inevitable.

>>46522995
It'll be fine. Not all wigs are made in such a way that braiding is possible (or will look good,) but generally speaking they're pretty tolerant to whatever's done to them. The fancy pre-braided styles are another matter, as some of those braids are never meant to come out, but those are fairly obvious upon handling.

>>46524441
They sell functional mini clothing irons that would be safer and lower-temp, I'd consider trying with those. As for whether or not you can, it really depends on the garment. Some are too delicate, and others are more rugged, but generally, as with human clothes, you can tell when handling them about how sturdy they are. As a rule, doll clothes tend to be more on the delicate side, but basic things like jeans and t-shirts are pretty indestructible under normal wear-and-tear.

Anon it's okay. I promise you you will not turbo-destroy your doll by breathing on it wrong.

>Rinsing/washing new clothes in the sink under cold water can also help free up loose dye, but that's not possible for every garment
I remember doing this with all of the first (cheap) clothes I bought. The result was that no dye came out but many of them got wrinkled and I was unable to iron them out, 1/6 clothes are way too small for a normal iron.
Turns out my doll's limbs aren't even vinyl in the first place and the feet, which are, haven't gotten dyed even wearing black tights. Also happens to be that most clothes I've bought are either clearly lined or have the color/pattern only on one side. So I haven't bothered since.

Can you do stuff like wrapping cling film around the legs if you're putting black socks on? Is it a bad idea?

>> No.46525575

>>46525428
You can, it'll protect the doll in the short term, but in the long term the cling film can also just absorb and then transfer the dye through to the doll, as it's also porous - think of trying to hold water inside of a sheet of cling wrap, it'll hold it for a bit but you'll soon start to feel and see moisture on the outside.

>> No.46525581

i have a Billy that i’ve repurposed into a wardrobe using short tension rods meant for curtains (one in each half), small wooden hangers from amazon, and key rings (because the hanger hooks are too small for the curtain rod). the hangers are kind of pricy, which is the biggest downside, but i like them…i also have tiny clothespins from the craft store to help secure things that want to slip off the hangers. i might get my shit together and put in some kind of rod that fits the hangers as-is, but this is an acceptable workaround for me. i could probably organize better to fit in another rod too, but i don’t have that much extra clothing yet. having easy access has made me much more likely to actually play around with outfits, so it feels worthwhile to organize this way!

I was cleaning up and found a nice belt/scarf hangar. I don’t have any small hangars yet just this cardboard w/plastic hook from clothes. I cant imagine small hangars wouldnt fit this particular hangar. Could be another option for doll stuff

>>46526851
You could probably find even smaller curtain rods or salvage rod from something, or use wooden dowels and cut them to size (if its small enough you might be about to score it with a razor blade and snap them) and find an appropriate rod socket to match.
